Carp Lake
Overview
Carp Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential northern British Columbia experience, characterized by its premier rainbow trout fishing and serene wilderness setting. Located within the ancestral lands of the McLeod Lake Indian Band, this park is a favored destination for those seeking a quiet retreat from the modern world. With over 3,000 hectares of water and numerous islands to explore, it provides a sense of isolation and natural beauty that is increasingly rare for travelers today.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately two hours north of Prince George near the community of McLeod Lake, BC, the park sits on the rolling Nechako Plateau. The landscape is dominated by thick sub-boreal spruce forests and the expansive waters of Carp Lake itself. The park includes a diverse range of smaller lakes and waterfalls, providing a rugged backdrop that transitions beautifully through the seasons, though it is most vibrant and accessible during the summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic camping experience designed for self-contained travelers. The park features two main campgrounds, Carp Lake and War Falls, offering vehicle-accessible campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electricity or water hookups, visitors have access to hand pump water and pit toilets. A well-maintained boat launch is available, facilitating easy access to the water for anglers and paddlers looking to reach the more remote sections of the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for most visitors is the exceptional rainbow trout fishery, which is widely considered among the best in the region. Boaters can spend days navigating the dozens of islands scattered across the lake, some of which feature archaeological sites. For those on land, a short hike leads to the impressive War Falls, where the water cascades over rocky ledges. The area is also excellent for wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of moose, eagles, and black bears.
Who This Park Is Best For
Carp Lake is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a back-to-basics approach to camping. It is a haven for serious anglers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize privacy and natural immersion over luxury resort amenities. If your travel style involves off-grid living and waking up to the sounds of loons on the water, this park will provide a memorable and authentic northern BC adventure.

We were so so close! Only 12 mins more to go to War Falls and we gave up. The snow was too deep and there’s no way we wanted to slide over the edge. We will return in a couple more weeks!

Island camping is great! Great bow fishing. Big (and small) burbot, good times. You don't have to island camp in a tent to get out here #whitesprucesouth

This is a beautiful park. Approximately 30 minutes in from hwy 97 North. A beautiful hike into War Falls. War campground has about 12 sites right on the lake with 2 pit toilets and a boat launch. Carp Lake campground is much bigger and provides a cement boat launch , playground and hiking trails. The sites here are above the lake but the ones to the left of the boat launch have some very nice views. We hiked the beach trail which was amazing. About 100 steps to climb back up. Lol

A great lake and park. TONS to explore. Great for paddling. Stayed out on Spirea Island for two nights, the tent pages were great, the site clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend booking an island for a weekend fishing trip. The rainbows are plentiful.
