Catalina

Overview

Catalina State Park serves as a gateway to the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains, offering a rare opportunity to camp directly among towering Saguaros and rugged desert foothills. This destination is widely regarded as a scenic wilderness retreat rather than a standard commercial lot. It provides RVers with a quiet, nature-focused environment that highlights the iconic landscapes of the American Southwest while maintaining easy access to modern conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Tucson in the town of Oro Valley, the park is nestled at the base of Mount Lemmon. The surrounding landscape is characterized by high-desert flora, dramatic rock formations, and winding seasonal streams. While the park feels secluded, it is conveniently located near Highway 77, providing quick access to grocery stores, restaurants, and medical services. This balance of wilderness and proximity makes it a standout choice for travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers nearly 120 campsites, each equipped with water and electric hookups (30/50 amp). While individual sewer connections are not provided, the park maintains high-quality infrastructure for travelers:

  • A centrally located dump station for convenient waste management.
  • Clean restrooms with hot showers and flushing toilets.
  • Individual picnic tables and fire rings at every site for evening relaxation.

The facilities are noted for being exceptionally clean, with paved roads and level pads that accommodate various rig sizes comfortably.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is a haven for hikers, with the Romero Canyon Trail offering access to natural pools and seasonal waterfall features. Birdwatchers frequent the area to spot some of the 150 species that inhabit the desert scrub. Beyond the park gates, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Tucson’s vibrant culinary scene are within reach, offering a perfect mix of outdoor adventure and local Southwestern culture.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best for outdoor enthusiasts who want to wake up with trailheads right at their doorstep. It is ideal for active retirees and photographers who appreciate the quiet of the desert and the dramatic lighting on the mountain faces at sunset. If you prefer natural beauty, open space, and dark night skies over commercial resort amenities like pools or clubhouses, this park provides the perfect backdrop.

February 2026 - People get pretty excited about this State Park. Hiking and scenery is excellent! Spacious campsites and quiet? Go “anywhere” else. This State Park calls the Ringtail Camping Loop “Rustic” - I call it BS!!! Ringtail is a dirt overflow lot period. Campers packed in like sardines in a can. Shame on Catalina. You should remove half the sites in Ringtail and manage it. Another example of the money hungry State Park System. Generators allowed 8am-8pm!!! People start the generators early and the hosts do nothing. The exhaust stinks and the noise is obnoxious. The retirees love this campground because restaurants, Walmart and Petco are across the street (Oracle) LOL. We have traveled a LOT. This is not our idea of camping. Again, hiking is beautiful, just know what you are booking.

Absolutely love this State Park. It has it all for the adventures. So many hikes to pick from, for all fitness levels. Mountain biking trails. It's in a lush beautiful area oasis, but only short drive to all the aminaties Tuscon offers. A trip to the Biosphere 2 was great!! A drive up Mount Lemmon Hwy is incredible. So much to see and do.... Loved it, we will be back.

Clean facilities, easy parking, and help staff and volunteers at this park. I also appreciate the dog-friendliness. I love the variety of well-maintained trails that offer different levels of difficulty, length, and elevation gain. I spent about three hours in the park hiking with my dog.
