Cataract Creek

Overview

Cataract Creek offers a quintessential mountain camping experience within the pristine Highwood area of Alberta's Kananaskis Country. As a dedicated Provincial Recreation Area, it provides a rugged yet peaceful environment for travelers who wish to escape the more crowded tourist hubs of the Rockies. The campground is beautifully nestled among dense evergreen forests and sprawling sub-alpine meadows, offering a high-altitude retreat where the sounds of the wilderness take center stage over the noise of modern life.

Location & Surroundings

Situated south of Longview along Highway 940, the park is surrounded by the soaring limestone peaks of the southern Canadian Rockies. The geography is defined by the winding Cataract Creek and the nearby Highwood River, which cut through the rocky terrain. Because of its remote location in the Highwood Pass region, visitors are treated to breathtaking alpine scenery and a high likelihood of spotting local wildlife, including elk, deer, and bighorn sheep, often seen grazing near the campground boundaries.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, dry-camping facility, which means it is best suited for self-contained RVs and trailers. The park features over 100 spacious, gravel-surface campsites that come equipped with sturdy fire pits and heavy-timber picnic tables. While you won't find electricity or sewer hookups here, the park provides essential services like hand-pumped water and regularly maintained pit toilets. The individual sites are famously large and well-spaced, offering significantly more privacy and breathing room than typical commercial RV resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for those visiting this section of Alberta. The creek itself is a popular spot for mountain stream fishing, while miles of rugged backcountry hiking and equestrian trails sprawl out directly from the campground loops. A short drive leads to the Highwood Pass, the highest paved pass in Canada, offering stunning vistas and access to iconic trails like Ptarmigan Cirque. The area is also a major destination for mountain biking and nature photography, especially during the larch season in autumn.

Who This Park Is Best For

Cataract Creek is ideally suited for the adventure-seeking RVer who prioritizes natural beauty and quietude over modern digital amenities. If your travel style involves boondocking and you enjoy disconnecting from cellular service to reconnect with the outdoors, this park is an excellent fit. It is the perfect choice for families seeking a traditional camping experience and hikers who need a reliable basecamp to explore the deep wilderness of the southern Kananaskis range.

If you don't mind driving for 13 km's on smooth gravel, you are rewarded with tranquility, spaces , great hikes, and above all quietness.

I camped here with some friends over the summer. We put our bets on this place to be good, as we had never camped together before, and most of us hadn't ever camped out, but we all wanted to take a break from university and this looked to be the place. We were also looking for a place where six twenty-somethings could go and not be seen as a bother. What we found was a fantastic campsite in a great location, far enough from the city to be quiet, and close enough to be convenient. The site is massive (~100 spots) but only around six were actually occupied when we arrived on a summer weekend. Maybe it was a stroke of luck, but this place seems really quiet because of how far out of the way it is. I hope it really is like this and it stays like it. Each campsite was well-maintained and had a fire pit and a table, though they varied in their privacy and size. We had one of the larger ones, and it was able to accommodate 2 small vehicles and 2 tents, but most sites look like they can easily fit a large vehicle and 1-2 tents. In terms of amenities this place is pretty barren: no electricity, no potable water, really only trash bins and pit toilets are present. Great for an unserviced site, though if you have kids or aren't super experienced, I'd go to a place like Etherington Creek or somewhere in Kananaskis instead, this place just isn't as family-friendly as some others. Privacy and noise is a concern here, the trees are pretty barren on the lower end, meaning there isn't much brush to block noise or sight lines. We almost always kept our voices down to a talking level, played music/guitar quietly if at all, and didn't even bring a generator or turn our car one even once, but could still be heard from a fair ways away. Just something to keep in mind for people who value absolute silence or privacy, Cataract Creek may not be for you. The staff is friendly and informative, and were happy to give us the inside scoop on things we need to know. They also delivered firewood twice a day, and ran a nice little store at the highway junction. I get the vibe that they won't be a bother to you if you aren't one to the site or other campers. Great all in all, they even got change when I initially overpaid for our site. Keep in mind, though, the pricing is strange. We were charged for 2 sites even though we were only taking up one. This isn't an issue with the staff themselves, more with Alberta Parks and not having a clear pricing system (at least to us), but it is a problem a few other people have had. Remember to prepare for the worst and bring some extra coins, just in case! All in all, I'd camp here again if my friends didn't want to try something new every time. Great place, would absolutely recommend!

We didn't camp here. We did titan falls hike and it was a great day out with the kids. Got a little busy by end of day. The campground is well kept and the sites seemed quite lovely! Would consider camping here.

A special spot away from the crowds. Make sure you explore down the creek - many gorgeous swimming holes.
