Catskill/Devil's Tombstone
Overview
Devil's Tombstone Campground stands as one of the oldest and most historic camping areas within the New York Forest Preserve. Managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation, this site offers a rugged, back-to-basics experience that captures the essence of the Catskill Mountains. It is far removed from the resort-style parks often found in the region, providing a serene and primitive atmosphere for travelers who want to immerse themselves in nature without the noise of modern life.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is uniquely positioned in Stony Clove Notch, a deep and dramatic mountain pass between Hunter and West Kill mountains. The towering rock walls of the notch provide deep shade and cool temperatures throughout the summer months. Because of its location at a high elevation within the Catskill Park, the surrounding scenery is defined by dense hemlock forests, large boulders, and the imposing presence of the surrounding peaks.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers should be prepared for a primitive camping experience, as Devil's Tombstone is designed for minimalism. The park does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups for RVs, and there are no shower facilities on-site. Amenities are limited to vault toilets and a manual hand pump for drinking water. Most sites are small and shaded, making the park best suited for camper vans, truck campers, or small trailers rather than large Class A motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The park is a primary trailhead for the Devil's Path, which is widely considered one of the most challenging and rewarding hiking trails in the Eastern United States. For those seeking water activities, Notch Lake is located right at the campground and is perfect for fishing or quiet paddling. Additionally, the village of Hunter is just a few miles away, offering access to the Hunter Mountain Resort skyride and local dining options for a brief break from the wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for adventurous RVers and van-lifers who specialize in dry camping and boondocking. It is not a fit for those seeking luxury amenities or high-speed connectivity, but it is a paradise for serious hikers and photographers. If you value a traditional mountain experience and want a quiet basecamp for exploring the high peaks of the Catskills, this historic campground offers a truly authentic stay.

Rustic campground with gross pit toilets and no hookups, dumpsters or dump station. Ok to tent camp here or bring a pop up BUT we’re in a 40’ motorhome and it was very VERY tight to navigate to our site. Site was long and somewhat level but had low hanging trees. It is also on a noisy road. Cost $22 a night with no amenities. We won’t return. Oh, and really odd check-in time 2-9 and you DO have to check in even with a reservation.

Ok. We knew it was a primitive campground Not our first time. But when I say nasty, it's an understatement. We rated it 2 stars because it is a beautiful place. Also, when I read about a state park having a playground I thought the kids would be excited. No... no. No.no. I wouldn't let my children anywhere near that playground even if they wanted to. (Which they didnt) and what looked like a seesaw was a lopsided merry-go-round. The campsite is small.. our truck filled most of the campsite leaving very little room for our large tent. Also.. the entire campground is right next to the main road, which can be easily seen even in the summertime and is noisy. Not sure what it's like there at night though, because we left shortly after using the outhouse. We've used an outhouse many times but this was unbearable. If you book a reservation online make sure to look at the complete map, as the one where you choose your campsite does not show many of the unattractive aspects of the campground. I added a few pics of the place. Should have got one of the toilet but it just wasn't worth it.
