Cave Creek (Maricopa County Park)

Overview

Cave Creek Regional Park offers a quintessential Sonoran Desert experience across nearly 3,000 acres of rugged landscape. Located in the northern reaches of the Phoenix valley, this Maricopa County gem provides a peaceful retreat defined by **majestic saguaros** and rolling foothills. It is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a quiet connection with nature while remaining close enough to urban conveniences. The park is highly regarded for its preservation of the local ecosystem and its stunning, unobstructed mountain vistas.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the charming town of Cave Creek, Arizona, the park sits at an elevation that often provides slightly cooler temperatures than the lower desert floor. The surroundings are characterized by the presence of **Elephant Mountain** and a network of desert washes that come alive with color during the spring bloom. RVers will appreciate the dramatic sunsets that paint the granite outcrops in hues of orange and purple, creating a serene and photogenic backdrop for every evening at camp.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 38 individual sites, each equipped with **water and electrical hookups** to ensure a comfortable stay for various rig sizes. Facilities include clean, modern restrooms with hot showers and a convenient dump station for self-contained vehicles. Each site is designed with a **large picnic table** and a fire ring, allowing for traditional camping experiences under the stars. The park also hosts a dedicated nature center where visitors can engage with interactive exhibits about local wildlife.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with over 11 miles of multi-use trails including the popular and challenging **Go John Trail**. Beyond the park boundaries, the town of Cave Creek offers a unique western atmosphere with eclectic boutiques and local saloons. Visitors can explore the nearby town of Carefree or take a short drive to the **Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area** for even more extensive hiking and glimpses of ancient archaeological sites and lush riparian areas.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for RVers who value **scenic solitude** and authentic outdoor adventure over commercial resort-style amenities like swimming pools or clubhouses. It is a fantastic choice for hikers, mountain bikers, and birdwatchers who want the desert wilderness right at their doorstep. Families looking for an educational and immersive nature experience will find that the park’s quiet atmosphere and **spacious campsites** provide the perfect environment for a memorable Arizona getaway.

I've stayed here in my RV (travel trailer) anywhere from 1 night to 2 weeks. The sites are large and easy to back into, well-maintained and level. The bathrooms are clean and shower water is hot, although annoying to have to hit the button every 30 seconds. Dog-friendly, which is great, please keep your dogs leashed. The hiking trails are nice, the area is lovely, and convenient to shopping and dining nearby as well. Good central location for all of the Northern Phoenix area. I only have two significant complaints/warnings: 1) there is a horse ranch / small stadium adjacent to the Park, which has a loud audio system. If you are in the family campground especially, this is literally adjacent to your campsite, and can be rather loud at times. 2) The dump station does not have a hose attachment to backflush your black tanks. There is water, but it is a small spray nozzle that does not come off, no hose attachments. I feel this is a major oversight to be able to adequately dump and clean black tanks.

Great campground. The sites are big and spread out. They have hot showers and flush toilets. Beautiful Views of the mountains and cactus all around. Very quiet and peaceful. We had wood fires every night. Very close to Cave Creek and Carefree, beautiful town. We will come back for sure.

This is a Beautiful Park. The RV sites are spaced out far from each other. The bathrooms are clean. The landscape is very Beautiful! Great price for camping!

Close to Phoenix, a great campground. Large sites, although there's little privacy, plenty of scrub brush and cacti. Park seemed very well maintained, clean and brushed. Staff friendly and helpful. The only potential downside is that the Cave Creek Rodeo is nearby and the lights and sound were noticeable. Not annoying, but distracting. Seemed to be plenty of trails around. Recommended!
