Cedar Hill

Overview

Cedar Hill State Park offers a unique blend of urban convenience and rugged natural beauty. Situated on the shores of Joe Pool Lake, this expansive park serves as a premier destination for RVers visiting the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It provides a peaceful retreat where the rolling hills meet the shoreline, offering a diverse landscape rarely found in North Central Texas. The park serves as a vital green space that balances outdoor recreation with historical preservation.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Cedar Hill, TX, the park is positioned along the Balcones Escarpment, creating a limestone-rich environment with significant elevation changes. This setting preserves a rare portion of the North Central Texas Blackland Prairie, featuring tall grasses and rugged cedar trees. The surrounding area feels remarkably secluded despite being a short drive from major metropolitan hubs, providing a quiet buffer from city noise while remaining easily accessible from major highways.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 300 developed campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups. RV travelers will appreciate the spacious layouts and convenient access to modern restrooms and hot showers. Key facilities include multiple boat ramps for lake access, lighted fishing piers, and dedicated picnic areas scattered throughout the park. The park also hosts the historic Penn Farm Agricultural History Center, which allows visitors to explore 19th-century farming life and well-preserved machinery.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water enthusiasts can spend days fishing for largemouth bass or kayaking across the 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake. For those who prefer land-based activities, the Dorba Trail provides over 1,200 acres of challenging terrain specifically designed for mountain bikers and hikers. Nature photography is also popular here, as the park is home to a variety of wildlife. Nearby, visitors can explore the Cedar Ridge Preserve for additional hiking or visit the city of Cedar Hill for local dining.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and outdoor adventurers who want a nature-focused experience without traveling far from modern city amenities. It is a top choice for mountain bikers seeking rugged trails and birdwatchers hoping to spot local species in the prairie habitat. It's a nice park, RV's and tent camping available on full hookup sides. We experienced that over the weekends people are trashing the restrooms 🚻 and just wondering or they do that at home also. A lot of people don't believe in picking up dog poop. My husband killed a lot of fire pits that people left behind without making sure that it was completely out. Please, take care of this beautiful Park. The staff is very helpful and nice.❤️

Absolutely loved our visit to Cedar State Park! It’s a beautiful and peaceful place surrounded by nature. The park is very clean and well-maintained, with plenty of picnic tables, BBQ areas. We enjoyed walking by the lake and spending quality family time outdoors. Perfect spot for a relaxing weekend getaway! 🌳☀️

We stayed with our RV from Sept 21-27. Space was nice, full hook-ups. The office workers were super nice and we liked that it was gated and you have to pay to come in. The park and restrooms ( the one we used) was clean. So many very nice covered picnic areas with tables and walking trails around the waters edge. The area around the park had several restaurants and a nearby Walmart. We got to ride our bikes and that was so nice during the week not as many visitors or campers The sun sets were beautiful to go and watch. The only complaint was that the speed limit we feel is to fast for as many people that are out there camping, fishing, or just picnicking. ( we went to watch the sunset and a truck was literally coming sideways towards us! So please get the rangers out there to enforce the speed limits!! But a great stay to go site see the Dallas/Fort worth area.

This is a great little hidden gem right down the road. I normally think of Possum Kingdom or Fairfield when I think of state parks in the Dallas (adjacent) area, but this is perfect to hop on Joe Pool and do some fishing. They have a couple different access points for boats and even a small perch pond for kids to catch. I will definitely be back for more fishing, day use areas, and trails.

This is a nice State Park for a day trip. I went last weekend and did a little fishing in the pond. The turtles were very in tune with bobbers and would immediately go towards the bait and nibble at it. I tried fishing on the bottom, but I didn’t get any bites. I’m going to try minnows next time. Some kids were pulling in little perch. They have several day. Use areas where you can use the grill and cook up a tasty lunch. I would like to try the camping facilities soon. This is a short trip from the DFW area. I’ll definitely be going back.
