Center Hill Lake - COE/Ragland Bottom

Overview

Ragland Bottom is a beloved Corps of Engineers (COE) campground situated on the sprawling shores of Center Hill Lake. It offers travelers a peaceful escape into the Tennessee Highlands, blending natural beauty with essential comforts. Known for its scenic waterfront vistas and well-spaced sites, this park serves as a prime destination for those looking to immerse themselves in outdoor recreation. The park is particularly famous for its emerald-green water and the sense of tranquility that comes from being surrounded by protected federal lands. The atmosphere is quiet and community-oriented, making it a staple for regional campers and cross-country RVers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in the rolling hills near Sparta, Tennessee, the park overlooks one of the state's most beautiful reservoirs. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and limestone bluffs that frame the deep, clear waters of Center Hill Lake. Because it sits on a peninsula, many areas of the park provide panoramic views of the water. The elevation changes in the area provide a dramatic backdrop, especially during the autumn months when the foliage transforms into a vibrant canopy of red and gold. The location feels secluded and remote, yet it is easily accessible for those exploring the middle Tennessee region.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features approximately 57 sites, many of which are designed to accommodate modern RVs. The facility focuses on providing a high-quality outdoor experience with several essential features:

  • Electric and water hookups available at most sites
  • Modern bathhouses equipped with hot showers and flushing toilets
  • A dedicated swimming beach and a playground for children
  • Easy lake access via a well-maintained boat ramp
  • A large picnic shelter and individual fire rings for evening gatherings

While individual sewer hookups are not provided, a convenient dump station is available on-site. The paved roads are perfect for a casual evening stroll or bike ride.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with excellent opportunities for bass and walleye fishing. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the dramatic waterfalls at Burgess Falls State Park or enjoy the unique geological formations at Rock Island State Park. The nearby Caney Fork River is famous for its trout fishing and kayaking runs. If you prefer land-based adventures, the area offers numerous hiking trails that wind through the lush Cumberland Plateau. History buffs may also enjoy visiting the nearby downtown Sparta area to experience local Tennessee charm and hospitality.

Who This Park Is Best For

Ragland Bottom is ideal for boating enthusiasts and families who prioritize water access and a natural setting over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers seeking a quiet, scenic environment where the focus is on the great outdoors. Because the sites are generously sized and well-maintained, it also appeals to those traveling in larger rigs who want a peaceful retreat away from the noise of interstate corridors. It is the perfect spot for travelers who value the consistency and natural preservation found at Corps of Engineers properties.

Become pet friendly. Seriously how bad can it be to let your furbaby walk around. It's not like there is white sand on the beach or gold plated picnic tables. Obey River Rec Area Pickett Co TN has a no pet policy too. However the pet is allowed on grass, play area, just not on beach.

We decided to take our new pontoon out on its Maiden voyage so we drove from Lascassas, TN to here and it was beautiful!! Also the TWRA are amazing!! They had to save use because we didn't think about checking the battery and ended up dead in the water🤦‍♀️! But it was still a fun, memorable trip! We will be going back!! We haven't camped there but plan to!

Clean park there are public rest rooms handicapped accessible but there is kinda steep incline to them . Great place to swim appearantly I don't swim but there is sandy beach and it's roped off from open water. My dog loves swimming there though
