Charles Mill Lake Park

Overview

Charles Mill Lake Park is a cornerstone of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, offering a tranquil retreat in the heart of North Central Ohio. This destination spans over 2,000 acres of land and features a massive 1,350-acre lake, making it a prime spot for those who enjoy being near the water. The park is characterized by its rolling terrain and dense woodlots, providing a classic Midwestern outdoor experience for RV travelers seeking relaxation and natural beauty without the noise of high-traffic tourist hubs.

Location & Surroundings

Located just east of Mansfield, OH, the park straddles the line between Richland and Ashland counties. The setting is defined by the scenic reservoir and its many quiet coves, which create a peaceful buffer from the hustle of nearby highways. The surrounding area is largely rural, offering visitors a chance to escape into a landscape of hardwood forests and gentle hills. The park provides easy access to local amenities while maintaining a feeling of being tucked away in a lush, green corridor.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility caters to various camping styles with several hundred campsites designed to accommodate modern rigs and traditional campers alike. Key features available for guests include:

  • Full hookup sites and electric-only options for diverse RV needs.
  • A full-service marina offering boat rentals and fuel for lake excursions.
  • A designated swimming beach and multiple playground areas for family recreation.
  • Well-maintained hiking trails that provide excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the lake, visitors are close to the historic city of Mansfield, which is home to the famous Ohio State Reformatory. Other popular stops include the stunning botanical displays at Kingwood Center Gardens and the rustic charm of Malabar Farm State Park. During the warmer months, the lake is a hub for fishing and low-horsepower boating, ensuring a steady but calm pace on the water that is perfect for kayaking or catching bass and catfish.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and retirees who prefer a slower pace of life and a focus on traditional outdoor recreation. Because of the lake's horsepower limits, it is a haven for paddlers and fishers who value quiet waters over high-speed sports. It is a fantastic choice for RVers looking for a well-maintained, natural setting that offers enough modern conveniences to stay comfortable for an extended weekend or a longer seasonal stay in North Central Ohio.

Nice campground!!!!! Beautiful sunsets over the lake! 8/2025 - adding to my review, typically stay here Fri-Sun. Decided to extend a weekend and leave on Monday instead. Everything still beautiful and clean, however on Sunday evening after weekend campers were gone, some sketchy people started showing up to hang around at the empty sites along the lake. Noticed one guy just fishing, but others were just there to drink and one girl kept on going back to her truck getting something and heading into the shower house, not sure what she was up to. A big group of people we're hanging out at the end of the private docks. A couple left after quite a few beers, driving out the wrong way on a one way road. It was a little unsettling to have this happen while we were the only campers around.

This campground looks like a cross between Jed Clappet and Fred Sanford. Rundown travel trailers litter the property some looking abandoned or have been there for a very long time. 50% of the campground looks like this. The other half is so unlevel it's hard to find a decent spot. The constant late night roar of motorcycles cruising through the park drowns out the loud music and drunks that congregate at the trailer at the top of the hill by the entrance, the one with the light up palm tree and the dart board hanging on the exterior of the trailer. Lots of late night traffic there, people going inside then leaving 5 minutes later. Oh I can't forget about the family who resides there and all 4 couldn't get in the pool because they all were wearing ankle monitors. I will say that the grounds were very clean including the restroom and showers.

I have an uncle with a vote on this property and friends with a houseboat on this property. The lake is beautiful and is managed very well. It's spotless in the bathroom for very clean!

Well planned, clean, beautiful! We had a paved site with newer hookups. Restroom/shower combo units were new in the section where we camped and staff kept everything clean and tidy.
