Charlestown Breachway Campground

Overview

Charlestown Breachway Campground offers a rugged, salt-air experience for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Rhode Island shoreline. Unlike highly developed resorts, this state-run facility prioritizes the raw beauty of the Block Island Sound. It is widely recognized for its panoramic water views and immediate access to some of the finest coastal scenery in the region, making it a staple for coastal enthusiasts who appreciate a minimalist approach to the great outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Perched on the eastern side of the Charlestown Breachway, the park is situated where the Ninigret Pond meets the Atlantic Ocean. This unique geography creates a dynamic environment where the tides dictate the rhythm of the day. The surroundings are defined by sandy stretches, salt marshes, and the constant sound of crashing waves, providing a truly immersive oceanfront camping environment that feels miles away from the bustle of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area specifically designed for self-contained RVs, as there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. Visitors should arrive prepared for dry camping, though the park does provide chemical toilets and a trash disposal area for convenience. One of the standout features is the boat ramp, which allows easy access for those looking to explore the breachway or head out into open water for a day of maritime adventure.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature lovers will appreciate the proximity to the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, a haven for migratory birds and local flora. For a unique evening experience, the nearby Frosty Drew Observatory offers incredible stargazing opportunities. Anglers frequently visit to take advantage of the world-class salt-water fishing, while others enjoy beachcombing, shellfishing, or simply watching the boats navigate the narrow breachway channel during the golden hour.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for independent RVers who prefer a rustic, self-sufficient lifestyle over luxury amenities. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and spending your days strictly outdoors, this park is a perfect fit. It is particularly popular with avid anglers and photographers who want to be steps away from the water to capture the stunning Atlantic sunrise or bring home a fresh catch.

Great campground. Kid-friendly with an awesome view. The boat access is very accessible. Nice staff. Downsides: no hookups or water to fill tanks. You have to get water at Burlingham campground, 10 minutes away.

Was disappointed when first pulled in since you don't have water view for most sites. The last mile plus in is really rough since you're driving on sand packed road. But once set up I enjoyed it cause it's a short distance to walk the beach. Beach is nice and quiet. Had group of musicians close by but loved their music and the campground staff enforced quiet hours. The sites are close but I've had much worse. I would stay again with low costs. No amenities but location makes up for it.

Beautiful Charelstown beach but no changing rooms or showers other than the outdoor one It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the beach with beach gear Suggest bring a big wagon to load all the gear

Charlestown breachway has been our beach and fishing spot for the last 4 years, we love the beach it’s always super clean, during summer they take care of it more also charge for parking between 9am around 6 pm but it’s a beautiful beach, lots of space and wonderful views, don’t hesitate to come, you can’t grill and do other things like in a state park, but if you like the beach, sand and walking this is the place mostly for fishing! take care of Charlestown breachway it’s a paradise that deserves love and respect.
