Charlie Lake

Overview

Charlie Lake Provincial Park serves as a peaceful gateway to the north, located just outside Fort St. John along the historic Alaska Highway. Established to preserve the natural beauty of the Peace River region, this park offers a serene lakeside setting for travelers heading toward the Yukon or Alaska. It balances accessibility with a genuine wilderness feel, providing a lush, green environment where visitors can unwind under the vast northern sky while enjoying a well-maintained resting spot.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at Mile 52 of the Alaska Highway, the park is nestled within a dense boreal forest on the southern shore of Charlie Lake. The landscape is characterized by trembling aspen and balsam poplar trees, offering ample privacy and shade for RV sites. Its proximity to the urban amenities of Fort St. John makes it a convenient stop, yet the sound of the wind through the trees and the tranquil water views make it feel worlds away from the city bustle.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RVers, featuring spacious, gravel-padded sites designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Essential facilities include a well-maintained sani-station, pressurized water taps, and clean shower buildings with flush toilets. For recreation, the park offers a large boat launch and communal picnic areas perfect for group gatherings. Families often appreciate the on-site playground, while those seeking a classic camping experience will enjoy the individual fire pits and heavy-timber picnic tables provided at every site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws, with the lake being famous among locals for its walleye and northern pike. For those who prefer land-based activities, the park features several walking trails that wind through the forest, offering glimpses of local wildlife and migratory birds. Just a short drive away, the North Peace Cultural Centre and the Fort St. John North Peace Museum offer deep dives into the region’s pioneering history and indigenous heritage, providing a great educational side trip.

Awesome camp ground! The campsites are clean. Plenty of fish to catch and beautiful scenery all around. 🤘🏼

The attitude of the man from the office was awful. We got there at 10pm. We checked the sign before entering and it said quiet hours start at 11. We were trying to park the camper and Mr. Grumpy came out. We thought the office was closed and we could pay in the morning. And very rudely greeted me and kicked me out saying everyone was sleeping so we can’t park there because he was oissed we didn’t go to the closed looking office. I was clear that I was intending to pay and would happily go pay, but He continued to kick us out anyways. Absolutely awful customer service even when I responded kindly. Sucks when you have to tired babies and just had to fix two axels, are trying to make it through your trip, make it in to the campground tired, and you’re treated like that. I wouldn’t ever suggest them to anyone.

The campground is ok, but some spots are not flat. The lake is a actually 1.2km away. You need to follow a trail, but you do not end up on a beach: it's a boat launch ramp. Tha playground is awesome though with a 18 holes disc golf.

Great staff, exceptionally clean campground. Located right off the highway, but lots of trees so you don't see the cars or other campers. Perfect stop after a long day driving.
