Chassahowitzka River Campground
Overview
Chassahowitzka River Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of Florida Nature Coast. Known affectionately by locals as "The Chazz," this county-managed facility serves as a primary access point to the Chassahowitzka River. Travelers here will find a peaceful setting dominated by ancient oaks and towering cypress trees. The park provides an authentic look at Florida’s preserved wetlands, making it a favorite for those who value natural beauty over commercial flair and high-traffic resorts.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Homosassa, Florida, the campground is situated adjacent to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. This location ensures that the surrounding environment remains largely untouched and rich with biodiversity. The campground sits at the headwaters of a spring-fed river system, where the water is clear and the pace of life slows down. It is far enough from major highways to feel secluded, providing a genuine wilderness experience that is still accessible for modern RVs.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features various site types, including full-hookup RV sites equipped with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electricity. Visitors can take advantage of the on-site general store for supplies, snacks, and ice. A major highlight of the facility is the on-site boat ramp and dedicated kayak launch area, which allow for immediate water access. There are also clean bathhouses and laundry facilities available to ensure comfort while staying under the dense forest canopy.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the main draw here, with the famous Seven Sisters Springs located just a short paddle from the boat launch. Adventurous guests can explore the unique limestone vents or venture further downriver to spot manatees, dolphins, and various bird species. For those looking to explore the local area, the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is only a short drive away, offering a chance to see Florida’s iconic wildlife, including West Indian manatees.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal fit for avid paddlers and anglers who want immediate access to the water. It caters to travelers who enjoy a rustic, quiet atmosphere and the chance to disconnect from digital distractions. If you prefer a nature-centric home base over a resort-style stay with swimming pools and clubhouses, Chassahowitzka River Campground provides the perfect environment for exploring Florida’s wild side.

We rented kayaks from the campground to explore Seven Sisters Spring, The Crack, and of course the Chaz. We were pleased with the experience, found the pricing fair, and the employees helpful and friendly.

I see why this place is getting shut down. The staff are unhelpful and just ride around on golf carts and if you have questions you can definitely tell them are aggravated by it. No southern hospitality. Lady we checked in with had a nasty attitude. Maybe it’s because they are shutting down but there is nothing to do here they stop letting people kayak at 1-2pm at all the surrounding areas

This was a very clean and quiet campground with excellent service at the office and kayak rental! The boat ramp is a 5 minute walk from the tent camping and the 2 person campground was adequate in space. I look forward to booking this again in the future

I had a great experience camping here! The site was clean, spacious, and surrounded by beautiful nature. It was perfect for setting up a large tent, table, and chairs. Very peaceful and safe. Close to the river for kayaking or relaxing, and great for disconnecting and enjoying the outdoors. Highly recommend and would definitely come back!

Ive visited twice and launched my own kayak. The area does not disappoint. Nice clear cool water. Arrive early for parking. It doesn't hurt to call ahead if you need kayak rentals. Nice boat ramp and easy access to lauch your personal kayak/canoe or small boat.
