Chattahoochee-Oconee/Tallulah River

Overview

The Tallulah River Campground, nestled within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, offers a serene escape for travelers seeking the authentic beauty of North Georgia. Located just outside Clayton, this destination is defined by the rushing waters of the Tallulah River and a dense forest canopy. It is a primitive camping area that prioritizes a deep connection with the natural environment over modern resort luxuries, making it a peaceful sanctuary for those looking to unplug from the daily grind and immerse themselves in the wild.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away at an elevation of nearly 2,000 feet, the campground provides a cool, lush setting in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The site is situated along the riverbanks near the North Carolina border, offering stunning views of native flora like rhododendrons and towering hardwoods. To reach this secluded gem, visitors travel along scenic, winding roads that showcase the rugged topography of the region, providing a sense of true mountain seclusion while remaining accessible to the small-town conveniences of nearby Clayton.

Amenities & Park Features

In keeping with its National Forest designation, the facilities here are basic and designed for a rustic experience. The park provides essential features to ensure a comfortable stay while maintaining the integrity of the wilderness:

  • Designated campsites with level pads for smaller RVs and trailers.
  • On-site vault toilets and potable water seasonal availability.
  • Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at every site for campfire cooking.

RVers should plan for a dry camping experience, as the park does not provide sewer or electrical hookups. It is essential to arrive with full tanks and a prepared mindset for a traditional off-grid stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The campground is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in premier trout fishing along the river’s edge. Hikers can easily access the Coleman River Trail or take a short drive to explore the breathtaking vistas and suspension bridge at Tallulah Gorge State Park. Additionally, the nearby town of Clayton provides a gateway to local culture, featuring award-winning restaurants and unique boutiques, allowing travelers to balance their wilderness stay with small-town charm and exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is best suited for adventurous RVers who travel in smaller rigs, camper vans, or truck campers. Because the access roads can be narrow and the sites are modest in size, it is not recommended for large big-rig motorhomes. It is the perfect choice for nature photographers and anglers who want to wake up just steps away from the water. If you value quiet nights, starry skies, and a lack of digital distractions, this forest hideaway will fit your travel style perfectly.

We stayed just before Christmas! Nice little campground with spots by the river and clean vault toilets.

Cool off-grid camping . Some of the sites might have enough clear sky to get star link but don't count on it. Awesome dirt roads and fishing here. Georgia Traverse is close by.

We had an amazing experience at Tallulah River Campground! The location is absolutely breathtaking—nestled between the mountains and surrounded by nature at its finest. The river runs right along the campsites, which made it peaceful and perfect for relaxing by the water. The campground is clean, well-maintained, and ideal for RVs. Easy access, spacious spots, and plenty of shade. We loved waking up to the sound of the river and enjoying coffee with a view! If you’re looking for a serene, nature-filled escape, this place is a hidden gem. We’ll definitely be back! 🚐 Highly recommended for RV travelers who enjoy nature, hiking, and tranquility.

Best quiet camping spot in have been to lately. The site is right on the river banks and fishing is easy here.

We love this campground. Hate that they have gone to making reservations on line. I got the last two campsites available for the days we wanted. There were numerous empty campsites while we were there as so many people don't show up but don't cancel the reservation. Wish they would go back to first come first serve
