Chequamegon-Nicolet/Boot Lake

Overview

Boot Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods escape within the sprawling Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This destination is perfect for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature rather than the crowded amenities of a modern resort. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the park provides a peaceful setting centered around the pristine 233-acre Boot Lake, where towering white pines and hardwoods create a private, shaded atmosphere for every single campsite.

Location & Surroundings

Located a short distance from Townsend, Wisconsin, the campground is nestled in the heart of Oconto County’s wilderness. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense forests and an intricate network of glacial lakes and streams. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a truly tranquil environment where the sounds of calling loons replace the hum of highway noise. The area also serves as a gateway to the Jones Spring Area, offering miles of non-motorized trails through diverse terrain.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional, rustic facility designed primarily for self-contained RVers and tent campers. While you will not find electric or sewer hookups here, the park provides large, level campsites that offer exceptional privacy and forest views. Essential facilities include vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water stations located throughout the loops. Outdoor enthusiasts frequently utilize the sandy swimming beach and the convenient boat ramp for easy access to the clear waters of Boot Lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw, with Boot Lake being a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Anglers often find success catching panfish, largemouth bass, and walleye in the early morning hours. Beyond the water, the nearby Nicolet State Trail offers extensive miles of exploration for ATVs and mountain bikers. For a unique excursion, the Cathedral Pines State Natural Area showcases stunning stands of old-growth pine and hemlock just a short drive from the campground.

Who This Park Is Best For

Boot Lake is ideal for dry-camping enthusiasts and RV travelers who prefer a quiet, natural setting over a commercial resort experience. If you enjoy waking up to forest views and spending your days completely unplugged from the digital world, this park is a perfect fit. It is particularly well-suited for nature photographers and paddlers looking for a serene basecamp to explore the vast, rugged recreational opportunities found throughout Northern Wisconsin.

This is an amazing beach and lake. The boat launch is a bit difficult due to the angle needed to back down. And parkingin that area is limited. But the lake is a beautiful place. The water is clear in most areas. Loons, eagles, and other birds seen daily while visiting. Fishing was ok. Lots of tubers, jetskiers during wake hours. The kayaking was very peaceful and it was around 4 miles to go all the way around. Peaceful coves in some areas that boats can't get to easily. Great beach with an amazing swim area. No dogs allowed which was disappointing but understood. Picnic tables and afternoon shade. Great place for the $5 a day pass. There is also a campground located on the lake.

Been going here for 4 years now. Great sites…The bathrooms need to be cleaned more and make sure you get a site that the fire ring isn’t a tall one cause other wise no use to have a campfire. See in pics

Love this place! Very quiet and relaxing in wood with bonfire and tent. Boot lake is fun to fishing off my boat. Many rock bass and bluegill. My kids had awesome time. We will be back soon. P.S. the bathroom is very clean and beach is very clean. Appreciate the campsite host keep it up...
