Chequamegon-Nicolet/Chippewa

Overview

Chippewa Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience tucked away in the Medford-Park Falls District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Situated along the sprawling shores of the Chequamegon Waters Flowage, this park provides a serene escape for those looking to reconnect with nature. It is a place where the rhythmic sounds of loons and the gentle rustle of pine needles replace the hum of highway traffic, making it a peaceful haven for Wisconsin travelers.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Gilman, WI, the park is defined by its intimate relationship with the water. The surrounding landscape consists of dense hardwood forests and rolling terrain typical of the central Wisconsin highlands. The area feels remote and untouched, offering a sense of solitude that is increasingly rare. The nearby Yellow River and various glacial features add to the geographical diversity of this beautiful forest setting, providing a lush backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, prioritizing a rustic atmosphere over modern resort luxuries. RVers will find spacious, shaded campsites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electrical or water hookups at individual sites, the park provides well-maintained vault toilets and hand pumps for drinking water. A convenient boat ramp and a dedicated fish cleaning station make it incredibly easy for campers to spend their days on the water and prepare their catch for dinner.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the 2,700-acre flowage, which is a premier destination for musky and walleye fishing. Boaters and kayakers can spend hours exploring the numerous inlets and islands that dot the water. For those who prefer land-based activities, the Perkinstown Motorized Trail and various non-motorized hiking loops offer miles of exploration through the thick timber. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their binoculars ready for bald eagles and ospreys nesting along the scenic shoreline.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who appreciate a primitive camping style and value generous spacing between sites. It is a true haven for anglers and birdwatchers who want to be just steps away from the water. If you are looking for a quiet retreat to unplug and enjoy the authentic Wisconsin outdoors without the distractions of modern life, Chippewa Campground is a perfect match for your travel style.

It's just a beautiful place! The campground is clean, the spots are very spacious, and the river and rapids are right there. The last few times we've camped there, there has been an attendant, at Bagley River Rapids campground, and the vault toilets are pretty clean. This is my opinion and I have stayed at quite a few rustic campgrounds.

What an amazing Forest! The road through the National forest was freshly paved and an amazing cruiser. All the beautiful trees are so calming. We enjoyed our time there. I will always take this road on the way to and from the U.P.

Beautiful park and the river on the one side of the park is huge. It does have real toilets and you have to buy tokens to shower. There seems to be a lot of electric sites, but I don't believe they have water hookups. Unfortunately, the park is otherwise really low maintenance. There is a trail on the maps from the playground to the beach, which is nearly impossible to find. We did find it as there was a run-down trail marker and a tipped over bench sinking into the dirt. The beach is also unusable. There were some broken picnic tables in the water, and there didn't seem to be any sand there. The fishing pier was nice. The playground consisted of swings and an old metal slide and a volleyball court. The trails and the campsites were low on gravel, so if it rained, there would be huge puddles everywhere.

My friends and I have all kinds of fun running ATVs swimming and cookouts on the many trails and at the many lakes throughout the nicolet national Forest. It's just too bad that summer is over. There is so much to do in the nicolet national Forest. There are walking trails ATV trails dirt roads lakes you can hunt or fish. during the spring summer and fall you can pick wild blueberries raspberries wild strawberries choke cherries blackberries various different types of nuts various different types of mushrooms wild onions and the list goes on and on. During spring summer fall and winter the nicolae national Forest is a photographer's Paradise if you just know where to go.

This is the best national forest in the within 50 miles of butternut wi! The are wolves here and they will eat you so be careful. There are also bears, mountain lions, porcupines, coyote, Bob cats, and hillbillies. There are no deer here, they all got eaten by the wolves and bears and hillbillies.
