Chequamegon-Nicolet/Franklin Lake
Overview
Franklin Lake Campground, located within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, offers a step back in time. This site is uniquely listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its beautifully preserved Civilian Conservation Corps architecture from the 1930s. RVers seeking a tranquil escape will find themselves surrounded by an old-growth forest of towering pines and hemlocks, providing a lush green canopy that feels worlds away from modern life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 15 miles southeast of Eagle River, Wisconsin, the park rests on the shores of the 892-acre Franklin Lake. The water is remarkably clear, making it a centerpiece for the entire camping experience. The surroundings are characterized by a deep sense of seclusion, where the calls of loons replace traffic noise. This is a quintessential Northwoods experience where the natural landscape remains largely untouched and serene for miles in every direction.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest campground, the focus here is on primitive beauty rather than luxury hookups. You will find spacious, shaded campsites that can accommodate various RV lengths, though most are back-in style. The park features historic log buildings, vault toilets, and hand-pumped drinking water. For recreation, travelers enjoy a well-maintained boat ramp, a sandy swimming beach, and a designated picnic area perfect for quiet afternoons by the water.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the lake itself, perfect for paddling, fishing, and swimming in its pristine waters. Anglers often find walleye, bass, and panfish. Beyond the park boundaries, the town of Eagle River provides a charming gateway with local shops and dining. For those wanting to explore the deep woods, the Hidden Lakes Trail offers a longer hiking loop through the forest, showcasing the diverse ecosystem of northern Wisconsin.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes natural scenery and historical charm over resort-style amenities like Wi-Fi or full hookups. It is perfect for those who enjoy dry camping in a deep forest setting. If you are a traveler looking for a quiet, rustic retreat to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature, Franklin Lake provides the perfect historic backdrop for your adventure.

The National forest is a lot of acres of recreational opportunities. You can enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, hunting in the fall, canoeing or kayaking, etc. It is a very beautiful place.
