Chesapeake Campground
Overview
Chesapeake Campground offers a traditional outdoor experience in the heart of coastal Virginia. This facility focuses on providing a family-friendly atmosphere surrounded by nature, avoiding the sterile feel of a standard highway-side stop. With a diverse mix of shaded and open sites, it serves as a comfortable base for exploring the Tidewater region while maintaining a peaceful, wooded environment for those who enjoy a classic camping aesthetic.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the city of Chesapeake, the park provides a unique blend of suburban convenience and deep-woods seclusion. It is located near the Great Dismal Swamp, offering easy access to one of the most significant natural preserves in the Mid-Atlantic. The surrounding area is defined by winding waterways and dense forests, creating a scenic backdrop for travelers arriving from either the rural south or the busier urbanized northern corridors.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped with full hookup sites that accommodate various rig sizes. Recreation is a major draw here, and the park provides several features to keep guests engaged during their stay:
- A seasonal swimming pool and mini-golf course for family fun.
- An on-site driving range and bike rentals for active travelers.
- A general store, laundry facilities, and propane filling station.
Nature enthusiasts will especially appreciate the hiking trails that connect visitors directly with the local ecosystem, providing opportunities for birdwatching and photography right from the campsite.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the campground borders, the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail is a highlight for cyclists looking to explore miles of paved paths. The park is also a short drive from the historic waterfronts of Norfolk and Portsmouth. Families often take advantage of the proximity to Virginia Beach, located about 30 minutes away, allowing for easy day trips to the Atlantic Ocean before returning to the quieter, shaded retreat of the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is an ideal match for families with children who need plenty of on-site activities and outdoor space to stay entertained. It also suits outdoor enthusiasts looking for a gateway to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Because of its quiet evenings and ample natural shade, it is a great choice for travelers who prefer a scenic, relaxed pace over the high-traffic atmosphere of the more commercialized coastal resort parks.

Probably pretty good for people with RVs. As a fairly well outfitted tent camper, I found the tent area pretty difficult to navigate on foot in the dark. Bumpy paths aren't paved very well, covered with leaves/pine needles, slick. I planned on a week, but with rain in the forecast, I left early. Also has cabins I will probably go back there for that. Lots of cute touches.

Have been to campground never had problems other than normal bugs maybe little extra but was worth. But last time had bed bugs and many biting ants. Had someone come out and confirmed, sent to management as I was ask to nothing not a call not a email.. nothing Very disappointing. Next days had to through away all cloths bedding pillows away lot of stuff was there seem last night had to wash through all in back of truck. Slept in truck Only thing I noticed at first was bits there just thought was ants next door lady tried spraying smooth keep ants out but come to find out it was not ants that were problem IT WAS BED BUGS I have through out my mattress bigger problem than I ever imagined All really wanted was at point of leaving was to help get somewhere to stay until could figured out. Never been through this crazy ride I had no idea was going to go through. I do remember man telling me that they had been cleaning for sometime after people had left because of them smoking, now I see that was just a scam clean up these people are on there way. Not that I know they knew what was they were cleaning or what was in there. Thought they were upstanding people never had problem. But now they not wanted to take even the slightest responsibility is just heartbreaking from place I truly loved. No cal rude they said they would call nothing I have left several messages got nothing they have extra number an email. As well as person that was staying next door that actually saw them had a friend over to her that confirmed that it was indeed no doubt bed bugs. All with some normal bugs. Just very hurt by family owned camping was so non caring.

Fantastic campground Cleanest restrooms on the East Coast! Friendly and professional service Antique shop Cute golf course And an exceptional pool The camp site is dog and horse friendly and well maintained (no poop) The neighbors are compassionate and respectful and the regulars are so kindly youll want to extend your vacation just to get to spend more time with the folks. The biting flies are an absolute menace but they carry bug spray at the very convenient store up front Along with s'more gear, fire starting stuff, rv things, some quick bites and energy drinks! Over all this is a true gem of a campground I would highly HIGHLY recommend this to any summer travelers just passing trough looking for somewhere beautiful and friendly to stay for a couple days.
