Chester

Overview

Chester State Park is a hidden gem located in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park maintains a historic charm while offering modern outdoor recreation. Centered around a 160-acre lake, the park provides a tranquil escape where visitors can reconnect with nature amidst tall pines and hardwood forests. It is widely recognized for its peaceful atmosphere and well-preserved natural beauty, making it a staple for regional campers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a short drive from Interstate 77, the park serves as an accessible retreat between the bustling cities of Charlotte and Columbia. The surrounding area of Chester, SC, is characterized by rolling hills and rural landscapes. Visitors will find the park’s environment to be quiet and secluded, offering a stark contrast to the busy highway corridors while remaining conveniently located for travelers moving through the South Carolina Upstate or looking for a scenic detour.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers 27 paved RV sites that accommodate various rig sizes. Most sites feature water and electric hookups, and a central dump station is available for guest use. Beyond the campsites, the park boasts an 18-hole championship disc golf course and a large fishing pier that is popular year-round. For those without their own gear, the park provides seasonal boat rentals, including canoes and kayaks, allowing campers to easily access the calm waters of the lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Caney Fork Creek Nature Trail, a scenic loop that wanders through the woods and along the shoreline. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake being stocked with bass, bream, and catfish. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the Historic Downtown Chester district, while those seeking more river-based adventure can visit the nearby Landsford Canal State Park to see the famous rocky shoals spider lilies during their seasonal bloom.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and families who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and disc golf enthusiasts looking for on-site recreation in a wooded setting. Because of its proximity to major transit routes, it also serves as a high-quality stopover for RVers seeking a safe, scenic, and restorative night under the stars before continuing their journey across the Southeast.

Chester State Park is one of those hidden gems in our state, my family loves visiting all the state parks and while Chester wasn't all glamorous, it was great for a walk around the lake and spending some time on the trails and playground. There were lots of boats and places to put in, both motor boat and kayak/canoe wise. Definitely a great spot to spend an afternoon or camp for a night.

This is SC's best kept secret! Staff is wonderful from the warden to the host. Cleanest state park I've been in in NC or SC. We'll manicured very well taken care of. The warden and his staff should be very proud of what they have accomplished there.

Beautiful and quite park. We'd made a day visit years ago and decided to camp for a weekend. Enjoyed running and walking along the roads and nature trail. Also got to enjoy time on the water in pur kayacks.

I honestly stopped by for a few minutes because I was in Chester for another reason, but this is a gorgeous little park centered around a good sized recreation lake for fishing and non-powered boating. It's peaceful, uncrowded, and pretty. We spent more time than we had intended, which was a good thing, and I plan to return in the near future.

First time here, we love it! The lake view can't be beat. Only 25 camping sites, so there is some privacy. Wooden swings at the head of the lake with a short pier. The bathouse is updated with good hot water. The park ranger was knowledgeable and friendly. There is picnic shelters, hiking trails and disc golf. Rebooked for summer camping.
