Chickahominy Campground (BLM)
Overview
Chickahominy Campground (BLM) offers a quiet retreat in the vast high desert landscape of Eastern Oregon. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site is centered around the Chickahominy Reservoir, a popular spot for anglers and nature lovers alike. It serves as a peaceful basecamp for those traversing the long stretches of US Highway 20, providing a sense of solitude under the expansive Oregon sky. The park is characterized by its rustic charm and open vistas, making it a staple for travelers seeking a genuine outdoor experience away from more developed urban centers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 35 miles west of Hines and Burns, Oregon, the campground is nestled within the Harney Basin. The surrounding terrain is a classic high desert environment, featuring sagebrush plains and distant hills. Because of its remote location, the park boasts unobstructed views of both the sunrise and sunset, along with exceptionally dark skies for stargazing. The proximity to the water creates a unique oasis effect in the arid landscape, drawing in local wildlife and providing a cooling breeze during the warm summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
As a BLM-managed facility, the amenities here are functional and geared toward self-contained RVers. The park features basic facilities to support a comfortable stay in the high desert environment:
- Vault toilets and seasonal potable water access.
- Spacious gravel sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.
- A concrete boat ramp for easy reservoir access.
While there are no electrical hookups, the sites are well-spaced and can accommodate various rig sizes, making it a reliable choice for boondocking enthusiasts who appreciate a structured layout over dispersed camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the reservoir itself, which is renowned for its trout fishing opportunities throughout the season. Beyond the water, the area is a haven for birdwatching, as migratory species often stop at the reservoir. A short drive away, travelers can explore the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a premier destination for observing diverse avian populations and unique geological formations. For those interested in local history and supplies, the nearby towns of Hines and Burns offer a glimpse into the ranching heritage of the region alongside essential services.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize natural beauty and quiet over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for anglers looking to spend long days on the water or photographers capturing the dramatic light of the high desert. If you enjoy off-the-beaten-path locations where the primary entertainment is the crackle of a campfire and a view of the Milky Way, Chickahominy is an excellent choice. It serves well as a multi-day fishing retreat or a restful overnight stop for those journeying across the scenic landscape of Eastern Oregon.

Holmes bend the campground is nice and fairly quiet. The 2 hosts, Staci and Jeff they are the ones their camp site is directly across from toll booth they are wonderful and made our camping trip even better. They go above and beyond for fellow campers. I don't know what they get paid. Whatever it is, they surely need a $ raise great folks as these 2 will create repeat customers. we will definitely be back soon. I highly recommend this campground.

It is a family friendly corp of engineers campground located less than a mile from green river lake. The campground is a good size and well spaced out campground. It is a clean, quiet campground that seems to be well taken care of. Alot of wildlife is in the area and there is a boat ramp, marina, and a swimming beach less than a mile away. It is a perfect place to camp if you like to be on the water.
