Chickasaw/Rock Creek
Overview
Rock Creek Campground offers a serene escape within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma. As one of the most established camping spots in the region, it provides a deep connection to the natural beauty of the Arbuckle Mountains. This park is managed by the National Park Service, ensuring a well-maintained environment where the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps is still visible in the surrounding stone structures and landscape design. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate the quiet rustle of hardwood trees and the gentle flow of nearby water.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the heart of South Central Oklahoma, the park is tucked away just outside the city of Sulphur, OK. The surroundings are defined by a unique transition zone where eastern deciduous forests meet western prairies. Rock Creek flows adjacent to the campground, while the nearby Veteran's Lake offers scenic vistas and accessible paved walking trails. The terrain is gently rolling, providing a lush, shaded canopy that keeps the area significantly cooler during the warm Oklahoma summer months.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional, rustic camping destination focused on the outdoor experience. The park features paved RV pads that accommodate various rig sizes, though it is important to note that there are no hookups available at individual sites. Each spot is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill for outdoor cooking. While the sites are primitive, the campground provides modern flush toilets and access to drinking water. A dump station is located nearby within the recreation area for convenience after a stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the wonders of the Travertine Nature Center, which serves as the educational hub of the park. Popular activities include swimming at Little Niagara, a beloved natural swimming hole, and hiking the multi-use trails that wind through the forest. Fishing enthusiasts often head to Lake of the Arbuckles, while those looking for a quiet afternoon can enjoy the accessible fishing piers at Veteran's Lake. The Chickasaw Cultural Center is also just a short drive away for those interested in local heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
Rock Creek is ideal for nature enthusiasts and RVers who prefer a boondocking style of travel within a protected federal park. Because it lacks electric and water hookups, it attracts those with solar setups or those looking to unplug for a few days. It is a fantastic choice for families and photographers who want to be close to the springs and creeks of Sulphur. If you value privacy, shade, and a historic atmosphere over resort-style amenities, this campground will feel like a perfect fit for your Oklahoma itinerary.

A beautiful campground, clean bathroom and showers. The creek is near by to splash around and cool down.

Rock creek campground is awesome, been going since I was a kid. Its nestled between the creek and Bromide "hill" close enough to wall then hike the hill to the overlook, a short walk to veterans lake, a little drive away is Travertine creek, little Niagara and the travertine nature center. Restrooms are clean and centered on the loops. Only downside there is sometimes other campgrounds may have to walk through yours to get to them but that's the price to pay for a site next to them Campgrounds 40 and higher are the best but are only open in season (or as needed?) Plus its 2 minutes to town if you forget any camping stuff.
Outdoors & Daytrippers
We set up tent at campsite #5. We paid $15/night. The campsite has its own parking area(not a walk-in campsite). The campsite is next to the creek. The creek has clear running water that it was so hard to catch a fish. The campsite is well covered by mature trees. Overall, the campground is clean with well lighted restrooms. It is not too crowded as the other campgrounds in the area. The host was very friendly. I would suggest to bring extra mosquito repellent and bugs spray though.

Sites were nice, even though they do have to many closed off forcing people to camp very close together, but paying is easy, you pick a spot enter it into the pay machine and pay with your card, the camp hosts come by and explain the rules and then you enjoy your self, the hiking trails very in difficulty levels, and the views are beautiful, also there's stores near by so if you need something or forgot something it's easily fixed

Great campsite! Really big, very clean. Nice, clean well-kept bathrooms. We took a group of 27 people with us and this site was plenty big enough. Nice fire pit (bring your own firewood!) and the camp hosts/rangers were very kind. Will definitely be back! We also took the Trail to the top of the “mountain” right next to our campsite. Super easy and fun!
