Chilkat

Overview

Chilkat Inlet RV Park offers a serene and rustic escape situated just a few miles south of the historic town of Haines. This destination is widely celebrated for providing some of the most dramatic panoramic views in the region, overlooking the pristine waters of the Chilkat Inlet. It serves as a tranquil retreat for travelers looking to disconnect from the bustle of modern life and reconnect with the rugged Alaskan wilderness. Unlike larger, more commercial parks, this location focuses on providing a peaceful atmosphere that highlights the natural splendor of the surrounding landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Located along the scenic Mud Bay Road, the park sits perfectly between the towering peaks of the Chilkat Range and the deep blue waters of the Lynn Canal. The surrounding environment is a lush tapestry of Sitka spruce and western hemlock forests, offering a true sense of isolation while remaining accessible. Guests are frequently treated to sightings of local wildlife, including humpback whales breaching in the inlet and bald eagles nesting in the tall trees, making every morning a potential outdoor adventure.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides essential services designed for comfort during an extended stay in the North. Travelers will find well-maintained gravel pads that provide a level foundation for both large motorhomes and smaller travel trailers. Most sites feature 30-amp electrical service and fresh water connections to keep your rig running smoothly. The facility also prides itself on its exceptionally clean showers and a guest laundry room, providing a much-needed refresh for those traveling the Alaska Highway or arriving via the state ferry system.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Exploring the area is easy, with Chilkat State Park located just down the road, offering rugged coastal hiking trails and convenient boat launches for those looking to get out on the water. History buffs will enjoy visiting the local museums in Haines, while art lovers can explore the galleries featuring traditional Tlingit art. For many, the highlight is a visit to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where thousands of eagles gather annually to feast on salmon during the late season runs.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is the perfect match for independent RVers who prioritize a sense of place and natural beauty over resort-style activities. It is ideal for couples and solo travelers looking for a quiet, contemplative atmosphere rather than a crowded, high-traffic environment. Those who enjoy wildlife photography and birdwatching will find the unobstructed views of the Davidson Glacier to be an inspiring and unforgettable backdrop for their entire Alaskan stay.

Yurts are comfortable, great beds. Location can’t be beat. Prices very reasonable. Beth the owner was very kind and helpful, and her dog Lucy was super cute. Highly recommend this place.

Stayed here in the river yurt for six days for a yoga and mindfulness retreat and absolutely loved it! I was a bit sad when it was over. The owner Beth is friendly, kind and attentive. The yurts are very comfortable and well cared for, as is the entire property.
