Chilkat

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Chilkat State Park offers an authentic Alaskan wilderness experience for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Southeast. Situated along the shores of the Chilkat Inlet, this park is not a manicured resort, but rather a stunning destination for those who prioritize nature and dramatic landscapes over paved luxury. It serves as a gateway to the untamed spirit of the Lynn Canal, providing a quiet, restorative retreat for campers.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately seven miles from downtown Haines, the park occupies a prime position on the peninsula. Visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the Chilkat Mountains and the hanging glaciers that define the region. The surroundings are characterized by dense forest growth and steep coastal cliffs, making it an ideal base for those wanting to wake up to the sights and sounds of the coastal wilderness while remaining accessible to the town of Haines.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a more primitive camping experience compared to modern RV resorts. It offers scenic RV sites that are primarily dry, suitable for those who are self-contained and comfortable with off-grid living. While luxurious resort-style hookups are absent, the park maintains clean vault toilets and fire rings. The design focuses on preserving the natural integrity of the environment, ensuring that your view of the Chilkat Inlet remains the primary highlight of your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity near the park. It is a premier location for spotting humpback whales and porpoises that frequent the nutrient-rich inlet waters. Hikers can access well-maintained trails that wind through the lush, old-growth forests, offering chances to view the local wildlife. Additionally, the proximity to the Chilkat River makes this an excellent home base for birdwatchers hoping to catch glimpses of the majestic bald eagles that gather in the valley.

Who This Park Is Best For

Chilkat State Park is perfect for self-sufficient RVers who enjoy wilderness camping and value tranquility over extensive amenities. If you are an adventurer, photographer, or nature lover who does not require full utility connections and prefers waking up to coastal vistas, this site is an ideal choice. It is well-suited for travelers passing through Southeast Alaska who want to experience the true, rugged essence of the Last Frontier firsthand.

Stayed here in the river yurt for six days for a yoga and mindfulness retreat and absolutely loved it! I was a bit sad when it was over. The owner Beth is friendly, kind and attentive. The yurts are very comfortable and well cared for, as is the entire property.
