Chippewa/Mosomo Point
Overview
Tucked away within the sprawling Chippewa National Forest, Chippewa and Mosomo Point offer a quintessential Northern Minnesota camping experience. These campgrounds sit along the edges of the Cut Foot Sioux Lake, providing a peaceful retreat for those who value nature over luxury. It is a place where the scent of pine fills the air and the calls of loons provide a nightly soundtrack for travelers seeking a true wilderness escape near Deer River.
Location & Surroundings
Located just north of Deer River, MN, this area is defined by its proximity to Lake Winnibigoshish, one of the state's premier fishing destinations. The campgrounds are nestled under a thick canopy of towering pines and hardwoods, offering plenty of shade and privacy between sites. The surrounding terrain is a mix of wetlands and old-growth forest, making it a prime spot for observing bald eagles and other local wildlife in their natural habitat.
Amenities & Park Features
While the setting is rustic, the park provides essential comforts for RVers. Travelers will find electric hookups at many sites, though it is important to note that this is a more traditional forest service experience rather than a commercial resort. The park features paved boat ramps for easy water access, picnic tables, and fire rings at every site. Well-maintained vault toilets and pressurized water towers are strategically located throughout the grounds to serve guests.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the main draw here, with the Cut Foot Sioux Lake known for its exceptional walleye and northern pike. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Lost 40 Trail offers a chance to walk among ancient trees that escaped the logging era. Visitors can also explore the historic Cut Foot Sioux Ranger Station or take a short drive to the Winnie Dam to watch the water flow and spot migratory birds.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who want to be steps away from the water. Because of its quiet atmosphere and lack of commercial distractions, it is perfect for families looking to disconnect and enjoy old-fashioned camping. If you prefer secluded sites and a rugged environment over swimming pools and clubhouses, Chippewa and Mosomo Point will feel like your personal Northwoods sanctuary.

This was the second time we camped here. The campsite and toilets were nice and clean. The campground host came over to greet us when we first drove in. The only downside was the weedy conditions which hampered our efforts to land and launch our boat. Overall we were happy with our stay. A bonus was watching the fireworks launched from the Williams Narrows Resort on the 4th of July.

Previously we have camped at One gum but we loved this place even more. There isn’t electricity so you will need a generator. There is a small beach by the camp hosts site. This site is calm and beautiful. We will be back :)

Overall extremely well maintained, except the drinking water pump was not in service in July 2024 when we stopped by. Campers would need to bring their own water or drive elsewhere for it. Several of the sites have a very nice waterfront view. Many of the inland sites are also very private with ample surrounding trees and forest floor vegetation. Quick and easy access to the nearby paved highway.

This was my first time camping in a national forest. The campground is clean and quiet (some highway traffic, but that's ok). It's loved and well maintained by the hosts. The bathrooms are clean. The campsites have some privacy. I was impressed.

Hosts Dave and Rhonda are awesome. Bathrooms are spotless along with the entire campground. Helpful and thoughtful with everyone they meet.
