Chugach/Bertha Creek

This is a beautiful little First Come, First Serve Campground. We used it as “halfway” point from Anchorage to Seward during our weekend trip. There was no cell service for GCI or Verizon so prepare for that. Also, no satellite pay booth so there’s the honor system (Cash) pay slip you can use for the deposit box or use the app as stated in the posted directions at the pay area. Only one restroom on site so sometimes there was a small wait but otherwise it was very clean & well stocked. Each site had a good amount of wooded area and privacy. We loved the nice grill grates on the fire pit & large picnic table. Our favorite points of the area: The amazing Bertha Creek was stunning, with wildflowers growing & complete with a little waterfall. No maintained trails to the waterfall - be mindful of your steps and devils club. There is however a well walked small trail to the creek near the water well, great for photo ops! The mountains were nearly a 360 all around; so almost each site has a decent little view! All in all we really enjoyed Bertha Creek Campground. Definitely check it out !

First-come first-served, absolutely beautiful, small campground with about 12 sites on a single dirt road loop, next to a lovely creek. The sites are well separated and have lots of privacy. Vault toilets with no sink. Water via hand pump. No hookup for RVs. No camp host.

Very peaceful campground with Bertha Creek and a small waterfall. Hand pump for water, vault toilets and bear boxes.

This is a small and completely lovely campground on the Seward Hwy. The rapid creek blocks out all highway noise and my kiddos played on the creek banks for hours! We didn’t get a chance to do any hiking but I’ve heard it’s great!

You can recreationally pan for gold here for free, and keep any gold you find. There's a little secret with this place also. The campground is a National Park campground, so you have to pay to stay and camp, but if you go to the opposite side of the highway, there is a fairly hidden rough dirt road that winds around 100 yards or so, and has around 10 more campsites, most on or very near the creek, and they are free. Zero amenities for these sites, and its first come, first served, but if you don't mind roughing it, there's almost always sites available during the week, but they normally are taken very early Saturday mornings by locals. You can camp I believe 14 days, but then you have to leave. Also, in case anyone is not aware, it is illegal in Alaska to be actively gold prospecting with a firearm on your person or within reach. I watched a Forestry Officer confiscate a man's handgun, write a citation, and tell him he would have to make a request to the judge to get his gun back. Last thing...If you are visiting Alaska and choose this area to spend some time at, have a firearm, or bear spray with you at all times (except when gold prospecting), the Kenai Peninsula, and Chugach Mountains are home to a very large Brown Bear population, and this is especially important during any of the Salmon runs. Also, if you camp here, bring plenty of blankets, at night it gets pretty cold because you are sleeping right next to a creek that is fed by glacial runoff.

Didn't stay overnight, all camping spots were taken. But the campground was in a beautiful setting. Very close to Berths Creek and 6 Mile River.

A small campground with trails and a small waterfall. If you're driving south from Anchorage then consider stopping at Bertha Creek Campground for a night. This campground has 12 sites for tents and smaller RVs. There is some privacy between sites.
