Cimarron National Grasslands/Cimarron Campground
Overview
The Cimarron Campground offers a tranquil escape within the vast expanse of the Cimarron National Grassland. Located near Elkhart, Kansas, this destination provides a rare opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of the shortgrass prairie. As the only national grassland in Kansas, it serves as a critical habitat for wildlife and a historic corridor for travelers. The campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, ensuring a well-maintained environment for those who appreciate a quiet, natural setting away from the bustle of modern life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the far southwest corner of the state, the park is defined by its wide-open horizons and the winding path of the Cimarron River. The surrounding landscape features rugged bluffs and rolling hills that contrast with the flat plains typically associated with the region. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a territory rich with history, as the Santa Fe National Historic Trail cuts directly through the grasslands. The environment is characterized by its expansive sky views, making it a prime location for watching sunsets and stargazing without light pollution.
Amenities & Park Features
Cimarron Campground is designed for travelers who prefer a rustic, primitive experience. The facility includes several features to accommodate visitors:
- Twelve campsites with level gravel pads for RVs and trailers.
- Access to vault toilets and seasonal potable water.
- Individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.
While there are no electric or sewer hookups, the park provides a well-maintained space for self-contained units. The layout is spaced to provide privacy, allowing campers to fully enjoy the serene prairie atmosphere and the sounds of local wildlife.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Point of Rocks, a massive rock outcropping that served as a landmark for pioneers. Hikers and birdwatchers often head to Middle Spring, where natural water sources attract a variety of species, including the elusive Lesser Prairie-Chicken. For those interested in history, the autotour through the grassland highlights significant ruts left by wagons on the Santa Fe Trail. The area is also popular for wildlife photography and seasonal hunting.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for boondockers and self-contained RVers who value solitude and historical significance over luxury resort amenities. If you are a birdwatcher or a photographer looking to capture the raw beauty of the High Plains, this is a must-visit destination. It is perfect for travelers seeking a peaceful stopover while crossing the country or for history buffs wanting to walk in the footsteps of 19th-century explorers. Those who enjoy a primitive, "back-to-basics" camping style will feel right at home here.

If you live in southwest Kansas or south eastern Colorado, Oklahoma panhandle, this is an excellent place to go camping fishing and hiking. And only $7 per night to camp. Sweet.

This is a nice little hidden gem in Kansas. We started at the NE corner of the grasslands and worked our way to Point of Rocks. Beautiful scenery along the way. Definitely go to Point of Rocks if you’re in the area and you’ll get a great view. We used the map on the Avenza App and it worked out perfectly letting us know our location. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful scenery, wide open spaces, and a secluded campground. Camped here for only one night but loved it and already want to go back.
