Clayton Lake

Overview

Clayton Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat tucked away in the lush Kiamichi Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma. Centered around a beautiful 95-acre lake, this state park is known for its stunning pine and hardwood forests that come alive with vibrant colors during the autumn months. It provides a serene setting for RVers who want to trade city noise for the sounds of wind through the trees and water lapping at the shore in a secluded mountain atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Located just five miles south of Clayton, OK, the park serves as a gateway to the scenic Ouachita National Forest region. The landscape is dominated by rolling hills and dense timber, providing a rugged backdrop that feels miles away from civilization. The park's elevation offers cooler mountain temperatures compared to the western plains, making it a popular seasonal escape for those exploring the Pushmataha County wilderness and its diverse local wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several camping areas with a variety of setup options, including RV sites with water and electric hookups for modern convenience. Travelers can enjoy access to clean comfort stations equipped with showers, as well as multiple picnic pavilions for group gatherings. For those bringing watercraft, the no-wake lake includes a boat ramp and designated fishing docks, ensuring a calm environment for anglers seeking bass, catfish, or crappie without the disturbance of high-speed boats.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do within the park boundaries and the surrounding area. You can explore the network of hiking trails that wind through the forest or spend a sunny afternoon at the park's designated swimming area. A short drive takes you to the massive Sardis Lake for additional water sports or the rugged terrain of the Kiamichi Mountains, which are perfect for scenic photography and spotting native birds and deer.

This place is great for people who like to camp in a hammock, tent or pop up trailer. We took our 26 foot bumper pull and it was a tight fit on the narrow roads. It's not well marked or well lit, but it is quiet. A great place to fish and enjoy the view of wildlife. There were a few cabins up the road from where we stayed and several playgrounds for the kids. There is no dump station in this park, but the folks at Potato Hills Central were kind enough to let us dump there.

It might have been timing but the dump station was not accessible, the restrooms near the RV sites were quite dingy with no hot water. The actual parking sites back up to a major road and not all have access to water and power unto have a really long hose and or extension cord. It was also tricky getting level. The lake was small but nice with no maintained swimming area. We didn’t feel particularly safe there and the park wasn’t very clean. We stayed one night and found a place that wasn’t as picturesque but had level sites and full hookups. When we asked about the dump station and other things the reply was “welcome to Southeast Oklahoma.”

What a lovely little State Park, perfect for hanging out or fishing. The spillway is really innovative and unique, definitely a must see feature. There's a few cabins and RV spots for overnight stays. The perfect spot for a little getaway in the woods.

Absolutely beautiful lake! Great staff, bathroom shower wasn't functional when we were there but a good time nonetheless
