Coconino/Pine Flat East
Overview
Pine Flat East offers a classic forest camping experience tucked within the scenic Oak Creek Canyon. As part of the Coconino National Forest, this campground provides a shady retreat among towering Ponderosa pines. It is a favored spot for those looking to escape the desert heat and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Northern Arizona. Travelers appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the proximity to the creek, making it a staple for traditional outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy high-altitude camping and fresh mountain air.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 12 miles north of Sedona, the park sits at a high elevation, keeping temperatures significantly cooler than the red rock valley below. The dramatic canyon walls rise steeply on either side of the site, creating a sense of seclusion despite being near the scenic Highway 89A. The lush riparian habitat around Oak Creek attracts diverse wildlife, offering campers a unique chance to see mule deer and various bird species right from their RV doorstep in a pristine environment.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic camping experience, so visitors should come prepared for dry camping. The park features paved parking spurs suitable for many RVs, though there are no electricity or water hookups available on-site. Amenities include vault toilets and seasonal drinking water accessible via shared faucets throughout the loop. Each site is thoughtfully equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, perfect for evening gatherings under a canopy of stars in the crisp canyon air.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw in this corridor. Guests can enjoy trout fishing in the well-stocked Oak Creek or take a short drive to the famous Slide Rock State Park to experience natural water slides. Hiking is unparalleled in this region, with the West Fork Trail offering stunning canyon views just a few miles away. For those seeking a bit of city life, the vibrant art galleries and local restaurants of downtown Sedona are a short, scenic drive through the canyon.
Who This Park Is Best For
Pine Flat East is ideal for self-contained RVers who value natural scenery over modern luxury. If you prefer the sound of wind through the pines and the rushing water of a creek over resort-style amenities, this is your destination. It is a perfect match for nature photographers and avid hikers who want a basecamp that feels truly wild while remaining within reach of Sedona's world-class trail systems and iconic red rock formations that define the region.

Camp sites are scary close to the highway. Literally less than 30 feet off the 89. Loud and spooky especially with kids. Campground host was with us immediately (like followed us to camp) & sounded aggravated and asked what we were doing here then started talking at us about how we are parked incorrectly (IE half the tire was off the ‘pavement’ and in the ‘dirt’ - there is no clear distinction between the two and no signs). The toilets suck all of your excrements toilet paper and soul right out of ya. All of the camp sites are on top of each other being so close to so many folks while trying to relax in nature is tough! Great location for going and doing day trips to flag and Sedona. Not great if you want to listen to nature and not the highway and ppl talking all day & night.

Great location for hiking and sightseeing Sedona. The pit toilets could use updating, but are clean. Fresh water available at Spigots. No electric. No dump station. Campground hosts are great, they keep the sites clean and are responsive to issues. Heavily treed so solar use is limited. Some sites are double sites, which are very crowded. Lots of hiking trails. The hwy is very busy.

Location is beautiful, not ideal for any sort of travel trailer or RV though. Very tight spaces. The host were our least favorite thing about the site. The man and women came over and explained rules in great detail to include no music only in “earbuds” as she was explaining the rules she also asked if anyone was using the grills- as my mom was asking around she held her hand up and said “I’m speaking and on a roll” we would see the man on the golf cart and would wave to him and he never even cracked a smile. They just weren’t friendly people which made the experince and location one we wouldn’t go back to. Also a lot of road noise.

The hosts could have been more professional. The man the night before told us our dogs were loud and annoying, yes he used those exact words. They woke us up in our tent the following morning, I didn’t have a shirt on and was obviously trying to cover up, they didn’t leave. I felt very violated. It seemed like a couple together and the lady immediately had attitude, complaining about our dogs assuming they were fighting and being loud at 2:00am. We were sleeping with the dogs in the tent and they were not being loud at that time, trust me we would have known. The couple then tried to kick us out based on assumption not fact. I told them we were leaving today anyways, I just wanted to sleep and enjoy my morning, I came here to celebrate my birthday and they ruined it for me because they didn’t like our dogs… They then proceeded to hang out near our campsite and the man was menacingly staring at us for probably 10 minutes while we were packing our stuff because we felt unwelcome. Very unprofessional and childlike they could have handled that situation way better. The other host I forgot to get her name, she just moved down here from Colorado, she made us feel very welcome from the moment we got in!

The whole campground smells like horrible dirty never emptied-out restrooms. We had spot 21 and I would recommend NOT to book this site. It is right by the restroom and the smell is the worst, we could not enjoy the outdoors and even in the tent the smell was horrible. The host was super nice and offered for us to change site but we explored and honestly the whole campground was smelling like poop. And the wind wasn’t that strong. Run away from this camp !!!!!
