Coffins Grove Park (Delaware County Park)

Overview

Coffins Grove Park offers a peaceful escape rooted in local history just west of Manchester, Iowa. This 40-acre county park is situated on the site where the first settler of the township, Clement Coffin, arrived in 1838. Today, it serves as a quiet woodland retreat for RVers looking to step away from the noise of the highway. The park is characterized by its lush greenery and a sense of solitude that reflects the pastoral beauty of rural Delaware County. It is an excellent example of a well-maintained county-managed recreational area that prioritizes natural preservation and historical significance.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located just a few miles from the heart of Manchester, providing easy access to city services while maintaining a secluded atmosphere. The surroundings consist of rolling Iowa farmland and dense woodlots that provide excellent shade for campers. Visitors often enjoy the transition from the open prairie to the mature timber canopies that define the park’s layout. Its position makes it an ideal basecamp for exploring the scenic bypasses of Northeast Iowa, offering a cool, sheltered environment during the warm summer months while remaining close to the amenities of town.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional county park, the facilities cater to those who appreciate a rustic experience with modern conveniences. The campground provides electric hookups with 30 and 50 amp service to accommodate various RV sizes. While the park maintains a natural feel, guests have access to a central water hydrant, picnic shelters, and well-maintained pit toilets. Families often appreciate the on-site playground and the open grassy areas for recreation. For those who enjoy active outdoor movement, the winding nature trails offer a chance to spot local wildlife and enjoy the native flora of the region.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying at Coffins Grove puts you just minutes away from the Manchester Whitewater Park, a premier destination for kayaking and tubing on the Maquoketa River. Golf enthusiasts can find several local courses nearby, while history buffs can visit the Delaware County Historical Society nearby. The Maquoketa River also provides ample opportunities for fishing and scenic riverside walks. During the summer, the proximity to the Delaware County Fairgrounds makes this park a popular choice for those attending regional events while wanting to return to a calm campsite at night.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prefers a quiet, natural setting over a busy commercial resort. Very nice campground. Good shade, roomy sites. I think I saw 4 primitive sites at $15 a night. Most sites were pull through sites with water and electricity. Sits on the south bank of a creek. Potable water available near the dump station. Newer vault restrooms.

Great place all the way around and the Delaware County Conservation makes it easy to reserve one of the shelters.
