Coldwell Park Rec Site

Overview

Coldwell Park Rec Site offers a serene lakeside escape on the eastern shores of Lake Diefenbaker. Located just outside the village of Macrorie, Saskatchewan, this regional park is known for its natural prairie beauty and relaxed atmosphere. It serves as an accessible destination for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the expansive water views and quiet nights that define the Saskatchewan landscape. This park offers a rugged alternative to more developed provincial sites, appealing to those who prefer nature-focused travel and uncrowded spaces.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the heart of the South Saskatchewan River valley, providing guests with a rugged yet beautiful terrain to explore. The surrounding area is characterized by open grasslands and the massive expanse of Lake Diefenbaker, which stretches for over 225 kilometers. Travelers will appreciate the proximity to the village of Macrorie while feeling fully immersed in the rural solitude of the prairies. The unique geological features of the area, including deep coulees and rolling hills, provide a striking backdrop for sunset photography and nature walks along the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

While the site leans toward a more traditional camping experience, it provides essential comforts for RVers looking for a functional base camp. Facilities include:

  • Electrified campsites with 30-amp service for modern convenience.
  • A dedicated boat launch and sandy beach area for easy water access.
  • Clean shower facilities, pit toilets, and a playground for children.

In addition to these features, the park maintains several picnic shelters perfect for group gatherings or family lunches in the shade. The layout of the park is designed to maximize views of the water while offering a sense of privacy. The natural shoreline is well-preserved, offering a peaceful environment for morning walks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw, with Lake Diefenbaker being a premier destination for walleye and northern pike fishing. Hikers can explore local trails that wind through the coulees, or take a short drive to Danielson Provincial Park to visit the Gardiner Dam. The Gardiner Dam is one of the largest embankment dams in the world and offers fascinating insights into the region's infrastructure. The area is also excellent for bird watching, as many migratory species frequent the shoreline and surrounding fields during the warmer months.

Who This Park Is Best For

Coldwell Park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and families who prefer a quiet, low-key environment over high-traffic commercial resorts. It is a perfect fit for anglers wanting easy boat access or RVers seeking a budget-friendly home base for exploring the Lake Diefenbaker region. It is particularly well-suited for travelers with mid-sized trailers or campers who do not require the extensive amenities of a luxury motorcoach resort. Great camping area ,no electrical, 18 spots. Our first night was unpleasant with the younger kids in a big group who showed up at 10 :50 pm and wanted to party. Very sleep deprived.
