Colleton

Overview

Colleton State Park offers a peaceful retreat into South Carolina’s iconic Lowcountry landscape. This intimate park serves as the official headquarters for the Edisto River canoe and kayak trail, making it a premier destination for water enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. While smaller than some of the sprawling coastal parks, it provides a serene natural environment where the slow-moving blackwater river sets the pace for your entire stay. It is widely recognized for its easy accessibility and lush, wooded sites that offer a true escape from the bustle of modern travel.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off I-95 in Walterboro, SC, the park feels worlds away from the highway traffic and noise. It is perfectly nestled along the banks of the Edisto River, which is celebrated as one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America. The surrounding area is beautifully characterized by ancient cypress trees and tupelo swamps draped in silver Spanish moss. This vibrant Lowcountry setting provides a cool, shaded canopy that offers welcome relief during warm South Carolina afternoons and creates a stunning backdrop for nature photography.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a well-maintained campground with 25 sites that are primarily equipped with water and electrical hookups. While many sites can accommodate larger RVs, the layout retains a cozy and rustic atmosphere that many travelers prefer over commercial resorts. Guests have convenient access to clean restrooms with hot showers, a reliable dump station, and a dedicated kayak and canoe launch for immediate river access. For those traveling with families or groups, the park includes spacious picnic shelters and a playground for children to enjoy between excursions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Paddling is the primary draw at this location, with the Edisto River Canoe Trail offering miles of scenic exploration through winding waterways. On land, the Cypress Swamp Nature Trail provides a short but immersive walk through the local wetlands and forests. A quick drive into town leads to the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary, which features extensive boardwalks through diverse ecosystems. For a longer day trip, the historic charm and coastal beauty of Charleston or the vast ACE Basin are within easy reach of the park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for paddlers and birdwatchers looking to immerse themselves in a unique blackwater swamp ecosystem. Because of its convenient location near the interstate, it also serves as an excellent, quiet stopover for long-distance RVers who want to avoid crowded commercial lots. It is best suited for travelers who prefer natural tranquility and scenic river views over high-density resort-style amenities, offering an authentic South Carolina outdoors experience that feels deeply personal and unhurried.

This is a great little state park! The trails are very short but the Cypress swamp is cool to see.

Cute but small State Park. Quick hikes covered all the trails! Loved the scenery especially the cypress knees. Recommend!

We did not have a lot of time when we stopped here. And I did not know a lot about this particular State Park. We rode through the campground and everything looked nice and clean. Might be a little hidden gem for a quiet camping weekend. We popped into the store it was small butt nice and the ranger was helpful and professional.

This is a small state park in SC, but we really enjoyed our stay. Over the past few years gravel has been added to the sites and the roads paved. It is very well-maintained. All sites are full-hookups. Most of the sites are fairly close together, but they're at different angles around the loop. Our site #20 was more in a corner and is now our favorite site at this park. It backed up to the entrance to a short trail which is easy and very nice. There is a boardwalk to the Edisto River. Part of the trail goes along the cypress swamp.

I recently visited Colleton County State Park and had a fantastic experience! The park is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, making it a perfect spot for a day out. There are plenty of activities available, including a lovely playground for the kids and numerous picnic tables for a relaxing meal amidst nature. One of the highlights was the hiking trails, which are clearly marked, making navigation easier and safer. It's a great place to unwind, enjoy the outdoors, and spend quality time with family and friends. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun day in the park.
