Collingsworth County Pioneer's Park

Overview

Collingsworth County Pioneer's Park offers a unique and rugged camping experience tucked away in the eastern reaches of the Texas Panhandle. Known for its dramatic red rock formations and quiet atmosphere, this county-managed park provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of more crowded commercial campgrounds. It serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of the region, where the vast sky meets the striking colors of the local geology.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Wellington, TX, along US Highway 83, the park is defined by its proximity to the Salt Fork of the Red River. The landscape is dominated by stunning red bluffs and deep canyons that create a stark, beautiful contrast against the Panhandle horizon. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by native brush and rolling hills, offering a true sense of seclusion while remaining easily accessible from the main highway for those passing through the region.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed for simplicity and functionality, catering to RVers who appreciate a more rustic setting. Most sites feature water and electric hookups, making it a comfortable stop for several days. Visitors can also take advantage of several park features including:

  • Access to a convenient dump station for self-contained units.
  • Picnic shelters and tables spread across the grounds for outdoor dining.
  • Open areas suitable for walking and exploring the scenic overlooks.
  • Primitive camping sections for a more traditional outdoor experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself is a highlight for photography and nature walks, the nearby town of Wellington offers a glimpse into rural Texas life. Visitors can explore the historic Ritz Theatre, which remains a cornerstone of local culture, or visit the Collingsworth County Museum to learn about the area's pioneer heritage. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the surrounding area provides ample opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, as the river basin attracts various native species throughout the year.

Who This Park Is Best For

Collingsworth County Pioneer's Park is ideal for budget-conscious travelers and road-trippers seeking a quiet, no-frills environment. It is particularly well-suited for nature lovers who want to wake up to a sunrise over the canyons rather than the sound of city traffic. If you prefer a scenic and authentic stopover over a high-end resort experience, this park provides the perfect balance of essential utilities and raw, natural beauty.

Nice little rest area south of I40. Clean bathrooms & a safe place to let the storm blow over. Shaded parking spots, RV plug-ins, nice for dogs.

First taking our son to play in the creek and we had a blast! The park was very clean and the gentlemen working at the park was amazing in letting us know what we could do! We will for sure be going back some time! Only suggestion is maybe adding a little play ground for the kids!

Great place. A little hwy noise but tolerable. No internet, no cell phone, no TV. But is that a bad thing?
