Colorado Bend

Overview

Colorado Bend State Park represents the wild heart of the Texas Hill Country, offering a rugged alternative to traditional landscaped campgrounds. Spanning over 5,000 acres, the park is defined by its **karst topography** and the winding Colorado River. It is a destination where the focus remains entirely on the natural environment, providing a **primitive camping experience** that allows travelers to truly disconnect. Visitors here trade modern luxuries for vast trail systems, ancient caves, and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the state.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the small community of Bend, TX, the park is located deep in the river canyonlands. The drive into the park is a scenic descent that reveals dramatic limestone cliffs and dense cedar breaks. While the park feels incredibly remote, it is within a reasonable driving distance of **San Saba**, known as the Pecan Capital of the World, where visitors can stock up on supplies. The surrounding landscape is characterized by **spring-fed creeks** and lush river bottoms that contrast beautifully with the arid upland plateaus.

Amenities & Park Features

Because the park emphasizes conservation, the amenities are tailored for those who enjoy **off-grid RVing**. The drive-in sites are designed to accommodate motorhomes and trailers up to 30 feet in length. While you will not find luxury resort features, the park provides essential utilities for a comfortable primitive stay:

  • **Potable water spigots** are located at every drive-in campsite.
  • Access to **composting toilets** and a centrally located dump station.
  • Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires.

There are no electrical or sewer hookups available at the sites, making this a premier location for those with **solar setups** or onboard generators who want to experience the quiet of the canyon.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel of the park is **Gorman Falls**, a 70-foot living waterfall that is accessible via a beautiful but rocky hike. For those who enjoy life on the water, the park offers excellent opportunities for **paddling and fishing** along the riverbanks. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore more than 35 miles of multi-use trails that wind through various terrains. Another unique feature is the opportunity for **guided cave tours**, where visitors can explore the intricate subterranean world beneath the park’s surface.

Who This Park Is Best For

Colorado Bend is the perfect fit for **adventurous RVers** who prioritize scenery and outdoor activity over resort-style amenities. It is an ideal destination for birdwatchers and photographers looking to capture the **unspoiled beauty** of Texas wildlife. Families who enjoy hiking and splashing in natural springs will find endless entertainment here. If your travel style involves boondocking and a desire for **solitude and dark skies**, this park will be a highlight of your Texas travels.

The park was so pretty and clean! The waterfall was a bit dry but still flowing when I went. I dont recommend the climb if you have a hyper dog. The camping fills up quick, so reserve early!! They have no service so it is pretty peaceful to be there. I will definitely be back in the spring!

From Dallas it was 3 hour ride, was really worth it and refreshing. The Gorman waterfall was really nice but couldn’t get time to explore other routes. The trail was so beautiful and was perfect for camping.

Most of the bathrooms are out of order since the 2025 floods. Group camp sites don't have water. Seems like the shore along the water could be cleaned up (brush, not debris). The park is super quiet and amazing hiking.

To start, if you've got a camper longer than 25 feet you will need to stay somewhere nearby. They have a sharp sharp turn before the campsites. With that out of the way... Beautiful. Gorman falls is beautiful, some say not worth the hike but I'm a sucker for spring water. Hiking up the spring trail you go back and forth across the creek that feeds the falls from the spring. Very cool, and since there's water right there not nearly as hot as you'd expect. The other spring you can swim in, which was very appreciated after a day of trails. Just wish we could have camped here too.

Loved it! My first solo camping trip and the ranger was super nice and helpful. The hikes are amazing! Definitely recommend the Gorman Falls hike but go early morning or when the weather is cool, for sure!
