Conecuh/Open Pond

Overview

Open Pond Recreation Area offers a serene escape within the vast Conecuh National Forest. Located near Andalusia, Alabama, this campground centers around the picturesque 450-acre Open Pond. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this Forest Service gem provides a tranquil setting where the rustle of longleaf pines and the calls of native birds set the pace for your stay. It is widely considered a premier destination for those seeking a balance between modern RV convenience and the raw beauty of the Alabama coastal plain.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated about 15 miles south of Andalusia, AL, placing visitors deep within a diverse ecosystem of cypress ponds and rolling pine hills. The surroundings are characterized by the rare longleaf pine ecosystem, which supports a variety of unique wildlife. Because the park is tucked away from major highways, guests enjoy exceptionally dark night skies and a peaceful environment. The nearby Blue Lake provides a secondary focal point for recreation within the forest’s boundaries.

Amenities & Park Features

While the setting is rustic, the amenities at Open Pond are surprisingly robust for a national forest site. The campground features 75 spacious sites, many of which are paved and level to accommodate various rig sizes. Visitors have access to electrical hookups and potable water at most sites. The facility also includes multiple bathhouses equipped with hot showers and flush toilets, ensuring comfort throughout your stay. A centralized dump station is available for RVers, and sites typically include a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, starting with the Conecuh Trail, which offers 20 miles of hiking through diverse terrain. The lake itself is a haven for fishing, stocked with bass, bream, and catfish. For those who enjoy the water, non-motorized boating or electric motors are permitted, allowing for a quiet afternoon on the pond. Wildlife viewing is another highlight, as the area is a known habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and various migratory waterfowl.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over a bustling resort atmosphere. It is a fantastic choice for birdwatchers and hikers looking to explore the natural history of southern Alabama. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like fishing and campfire cooking will find the park’s layout welcoming and safe. If you value privacy and scenic views while still having reliable power and water, Open Pond is a perfect fit.

Nothing around if you want to get away. Beautiful views or alone in the woods. They have it all. The host will help f you need them, but they don't bother you otherwise. They do a good job keeping the place clean. Great value for $.

If you're looking for a beautiful getaway without all of the tourist trappings you can't beat Open Pond campground. Up to 14 day stays at very reasonable rates. Beautiful, forested area. Warm showers. And no extra charge for the vicious, running loose dog who attacked and seriously Injured my cat this evening.

Beautiful sites on the water! The sites aren't super far from one another but they are deep. There's tons of space between the tent pads and pond for activities. Only $4 for tent campers with America the Beautiful Pass ($8 w/o the pass) and $8 for hookups ($16 w/o the pass). The bathrooms are older but the showers have hot water so I can't complain. Trash is down by loop 3 with the Rv sites. Close enough to the beach to make day trips, and about 30 min from Andalusia. Andalusia has everything you'll need and a great walking track too!

Gorgeous day to enjoy outdoors. Attended a mushroom presentation at one of the pavilions. Nice view of the pond, there were picnic tables, water faucets and bathrooms. Enjoyed walking some of the trails, but stay out of the water...gators!
