Conestogo Lake Conservation Area
Overview
Conestogo Lake Conservation Area is a premier outdoor destination located in the heart of Ontario's rural landscape. Managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority, this park is centered around a massive Y-shaped reservoir that spans approximately six kilometers. It provides a peaceful escape where the focus remains on the water and the rugged natural environment. Whether you are visiting for a weekend or staying for the season, the park offers a balanced mix of traditional camping charm and essential modern conveniences for RV travelers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Wallenstein, ON, the park is nestled within the scenic rolling hills of Wellington County. This region is famous for its Mennonite heritage and sprawling agricultural lands, providing a picturesque backdrop for your journey. The reservoir itself was created by the Conestogo Dam, resulting in a unique landscape where deep water meets forested shorelines. The surrounding area is relatively flat and easy to navigate with larger rigs, though the park interior maintains a more natural, wooded aesthetic.
Amenities & Park Features
The park offers 166 campsites, with many specifically designed to accommodate RVs. Travelers can find sites equipped with 30-amp electrical service and municipal water hookups. Essential facilities include clean washrooms, coin-operated laundry, and a dumping station for convenience. For recreation, the park features a multi-lane boat launch, a dedicated swimming beach, and several playgrounds. The expansive reservoir is the primary draw, offering ample space for motorized boating, sailing, and quiet paddling in the early morning hours.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers will find the lake well-stocked with pike, walleye, and bass, making it a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts. Beyond the park gates, the cultural hub of St. Jacobs is a short drive away, famous for its massive farmers' market and local artisans. You can also visit the Drayton Festival Theatre for high-quality live performances or explore the quaint shops in the nearby town of Elmira. For those who enjoy hiking, the surrounding countryside offers several quiet trail networks through diverse woodlots.
Who This Park Is Best For
This conservation area is ideal for active families and water sports enthusiasts who want a basecamp for boating and fishing. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who prefer a rustic, nature-focused atmosphere over a high-end luxury resort. The spacious reservoir makes it a favorite for those traveling with motorized boats or jet skis. It also serves as an excellent spot for travelers looking to explore the unique culture and markets of Waterloo Region while retreating to a quiet, lakeside environment at night.

Great place to ride Seadoos and all kinds of different boats, it’s great to ride on, at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately though as the season progress and the water levels drop as the flood plane empties and feeds into the grand river. This area can get super shallow. You loose the last month and a half of fall boating and riding 😞

I think it's cool that it's here and available... But it tries to be a cross between a beach and an Ontario lake... And the compromise is too great. Enjoyed a short hike, and went to take a dip but it got cold in the evening. Water level was low - expect a muddy "beach". And just when you are prepared to ignore the private houses or cottages across the way, and accept that it's more like a backwoods lake where you can swim in nature as opposed to a postcard sandy beach..... someone shows up with a jetski and makes noise pollution. Solo staff member (at the gate) was pleasant and helpful.

Very clean park. The ride up there was nice and quiet. There weren't a lot of winding roads on the ride there but the scenery was nice. It was nice to see horse-drawn wagons. The beach is small, with lots of parking and camping areas and picnic tables. $8 per adult entry. Overall a nice park. There's a boat launch and talking to someone that was fishing there are good quality smallmouth bass, pike and perch. They say below the dam you can catch brown trout with ease.

Beautiful conservation area. Quite. For day camping is good. But, We went for group camping. Camping site was very nice. Beach was far... Need to take car. Beach is not clean, small and all rocks. From group camp ground washroom is far. And there is only one shower ( M/F) place for individual and group campers. Not convenient at all. One time camping is okay. Will not repeat again.

An excellent day with amazing weather. Nice camping ⛺️ places with decent facilities. Nice lake view and we spent the whole day and every one had fun. It is a perfect place for boating. The management maintain a good condition of the park and all staff were so nice (everyone we met always smile). I recommend it.
