Coolidge

Overview

Coolidge State Park offers a journey back in time, featuring incredible stonework and timber craftsmanship originally built by the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps. Nestled within the expansive 21,500-acre Coolidge State Forest, this park is widely celebrated for its historic aesthetic and dramatic hilltop vistas. It provides a tranquil escape from modern distractions, emphasizing a deep connection with the natural beauty and silence of the Green Mountains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Plymouth, Vermont, the park is perched on a steep hillside providing sweeping vistas of the Black River Valley and the peaks beyond. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and rugged mountain terrain. Its high elevation makes it one of the most scenic spots in the state park system, offering travelers a true Vermont mountain experience that is particularly stunning during the autumn foliage season.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic destination, the park prioritizes the natural environment over modern utility luxuries. RVers will find wooded campsites that offer privacy, though it is important to note the lack of water or electric hookups. The park is world-renowned for its historic stone lean-tos, many of which offer incredible views right from your shelter. Standard facilities include a sanitary dump station, restrooms with hot showers, and a large picnic pavilion for group gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

History buffs will appreciate the immediate proximity to the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, the birthplace and childhood home of the 30th U.S. President. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of multi-use hiking trails within the state forest or head to the nearby Long Trail for more challenging treks. For water-based recreation, the nearby Echo Lake and Amherst Lake provide excellent spots for fishing and kayaking in a serene mountain setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for boondocking enthusiasts and travelers who prefer a quiet, primitive camping experience over a commercial resort. Because there are no hookups and some interior roads are narrow or winding, it is best suited for smaller RVs, camper vans, or truck campers. It is the perfect choice for those looking to disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in the peaceful, historic atmosphere of classic Vermont.

Very nice campground, the road getting in is narrow and curvy. We stayed in tent site 24, neighbors before our site was a good distance. No other neighbors. The only disappointment was our site was on a long hill. Every time we went down to the bathroom. It was quite a workout to get back to the site. We are in our 60's and out of shape. I liked site 6 and 16.

Coolidge State Park is an absolute gem in Vermont! The campsites are spacious, quiet, and tucked away in the woods, giving you that true back-to-nature feeling while still being well maintained. The views from the picnic area and some of the hiking trails are stunning - especially at sunset. The park staff were friendly and helpful, and the facilities (bathrooms, showers (hot water), and picnic spots) were clean and well kept. We really appreciated how peaceful the campground felt, even when it was busy. It’s a great spot whether you’re camping in a tent or just visiting for a hike and a picnic.

Excellent. Pick any site you won’t be disappointed. Some prime sites are definitely better with sunset and Mountain views. Head over to Camp Plymouth state park for pedal, paddle boarding, kayaking or for day use. Visit President Coolidge’s birth place and the cemetery nearby. John Coolidge the president’s father started Plymouth cheese, visit the cheese making site if/when you are there.

A park with views! Coolidge is a quiet mountain view park. If you're lucky and you can snag a lean to with a view it might be your best camping trip of the season! Best sunset watching spot around at the pavilion. Or bring a picnic lunch and lounge in the peaceful field.

We stayed late in the season around Indigenous Peoples Day. Our site was fairly close to 4 others but luckily only 2 sites had campers even though the park was fully booked. We liked the hiking options and went for two different walks. There was a band at the amphitheater one night but we stayed at the trailer because it was cold. For a close touristy experience try going to Plymouth Cheese factory and Coolidge birthplace right down the road.
