Coosa River Campground At Lock & Dam Park

Overview

Nestled along the scenic banks of the Coosa River, the Coosa River Campground at Lock & Dam Park offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. This destination is built around the historic Maynard Lock and Dam, blending industrial history with the beauty of the Georgia outdoors. Visitors are treated to wide-open views and a relaxed atmosphere that emphasizes a connection with the local environment, providing a perfect backdrop for a weekend getaway.

Location & Surroundings

Located just southwest of downtown Rome, Georgia, the park serves as a gateway to both the river and the rolling hills of Floyd County. The surrounding landscape is dominated by mature hardwoods and the river's flow, providing a lush canopy during summer. It is positioned perfectly for those who want a quiet escape while remaining within a short drive of urban conveniences, local dining, and the unique confluence of three local rivers.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility provides well-maintained RV sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups and water access. Guests have access to various on-site facilities designed for comfort during their stay:

  • A central bathhouse with hot showers and laundry facilities.
  • A trading post stocked with fishing supplies and basic necessities.
  • A large playground and multiple picnic pavilions for visitors.
  • A double-wide boat ramp providing direct river access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is the primary draw here, as the area below the dam is widely recognized for its world-class crappie and bass fishing opportunities throughout the year. Beyond the water, guests can explore the rich history of the region by visiting the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site or exploring the sprawling campus of Berry College. The charming downtown district of Rome also offers historical landmarks, local boutiques, and various riverfront trails for walking.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for avid anglers and boaters who prioritize immediate water access right from their campsite. watch out for spider webs. parking is $2 the trails here are very nice and pretty simple, tho they were hard to find. it would be helpful if they had more signs. the trails have a lookout to look over the water it was beautiful. just watch out for webs. I felt like every 5 feet I went, was another web, maybe I just had bad luck, just be careful and bring hiking shoes!

Its good for a quick stay or if you bring a boat for fishing. No signs for where to check in, where camping is or right of way for that matter. Road to the camping spots go up and down, but the spots themselves are almost level. First sites are all along the camping entry road and river. If there's traffic, you'll here it. The rear spots are all covered by trees, which I suppose could be good or bad depending on the weather. Bathrooms pretty rough. Looked and felt unkept. Usually I'll use the bathhouse instead of the RV, but not this time. Employees friendly. Email reservation said the gate had a code, but the gate was open 24hrs, it looked like a manual gate and I did not see any code device present. I believe the lower number sites have no sewer, the upper ones, above the bathhouse all appeared to, but you'll want to confirm.

Horrible policy. This place is "ONLY" for Campers. This Meaning, the public fishing area is "ONLY" a couple of hundred feet located around boat ramps, which you are NOT allowed to fish from either. No public fishing from boat ramps or vacant Camper parking spots!! That's basically the entire place. So bring a boat or forget about it. I mean the freaking tiny access area to water for the public is 25 ft high. The fact that it's public access is really just marketing.. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Will not waste my time again... waters red anyways...

I have bookings for four nights in November of 2024 and so is I write this I have an envisited the park in person but everything I have learned about it so far is to my liking. The registration process went easily and once I have camped there for four nights in my pop-up camper I will write a second review and if I feel the standards are not worth a five and I will adjust the current rating. The five stars now are for the overall appearance of the photos of the place and the way the registration process took place. I have booked site 15 right beside the restroom and shower room facility as I am partly disabled and prefer to be a little closer to the facilities. I have viewed a video showing all of the campsites and number 15 looks pretty nice. Watch for my next review in mid-November 2024.

Nice park with a boat ramp and pavilions. Fee required for boat launch and day use. Water was way up and whole trees were floating down the river after hurricane Helene.
