Copper Country (Big Eric's Bridge)
Overview
Copper Country (Big Eric's Bridge) offers a true back-to-nature experience in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. As a **State Forest Campground**, this location prioritizes the natural landscape over modern luxuries. Situated along the banks of the scenic Huron River, it provides a tranquil atmosphere where the sound of flowing water replaces the hum of highway traffic. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the raw beauty of the Copper Country region.
Location & Surroundings
Located northeast of L'Anse near the small community of **Skanee, MI**, the park is tucked away in a heavily forested area. The centerpiece of the location is the historic bridge spanning the **Huron River**, which serves as a gateway to some of the most remote wilderness in the state. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense hardwoods and rocky riverbeds, offering a sense of seclusion that is increasingly hard to find in more developed coastal parks.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic camping destination, the amenities at Big Eric's Bridge are basic but functional. The park is designed for travelers who carry their own power and supplies. Key features include:
- **Vault toilets** for guest use.
- A hand pump for access to **potable water**.
- Individual sites with a **fire ring and picnic table**.
There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, making this a true boondocking experience for smaller trailers and van conversions. The **wooded sites** are well-spaced to maintain privacy between campers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the exceptional **trout and salmon fishing** available right from the riverbanks. Beyond the water, adventurers can make the trek to **Mount Arvon**, which is the highest natural point in Michigan and located just a short drive away. The area is also a haven for photography, especially near the bridge during the autumn color change. For those who enjoy exploring by vehicle, the rugged backroads lead to hidden waterfalls and stunning views of the Lake Superior shoreline.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for **off-grid enthusiasts** and self-contained travelers who do not mind the lack of modern conveniences. It is a favorite for anglers and hikers who use the campground as a basecamp for wilderness excursions. If you prefer a quiet, **minimalist camping style** and own a smaller rig or a truck camper, you will find the solitude here unmatched. It is the perfect fit for travelers looking to experience the Upper Peninsula exactly as nature intended.

One of my favorite rustic campgrounds in the UP. In the summer the water is usually down and it is quite nice walking down the river - lots of swimming pools and clear water. Be advised it is situated on a often active logging road so you may hear some truck traffic during the day if you camp close to the road.
