Coronado/Rustler Park

Overview

Coronado/Rustler Park offers a quiet, no-frills retreat in the high desert of Southeast Arizona. Situated in the small community of San Simon, this park provides a convenient and welcoming home base for travelers exploring the scenic corridor between Tucson and New Mexico. It is well-regarded for its expansive desert views and a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to those looking for a peaceful night’s rest or a long-term winter residence.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently located near Interstate 10, making it an ideal rest stop for those traveling across the southern United States. Despite its proximity to the main highway, the site maintains a surprising sense of seclusion surrounded by the Chiricahua Mountains to the south. The terrain is typical of the high Arizona desert, featuring wide-open horizons and dark skies that are perfect for stargazing enthusiasts after the sun sets behind the rugged peaks.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests will find practical facilities designed for a functional and comfortable stay. The park features spacious pull-thru sites that accommodate larger big rigs and tow vehicles with ease. Each site is equipped with full hookups, including both 30 and 50-amp electrical service for modern convenience. On-site amenities include a reliable laundry facility and clean restroom and shower houses. The park is pet-friendly, offering plenty of space for walking leashed pets while enjoying the fresh desert air.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of this rugged region is the Chiricahua National Monument, located a short and scenic drive away, where visitors can hike through a unique Wonderland of Rocks. For birdwatchers, the nearby Cave Creek Canyon in Portal is a world-renowned destination for spotting rare bird species in a lush riparian habitat. Additionally, the nearby town of Willcox provides access to local vineyards and tasting rooms that highlight the region's rich agricultural heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for independent RVers who value peace, quiet, and stunning mountain views over flashy resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for nature photographers and outdoor adventurers looking to access the nearby wilderness areas. Because of its straightforward amenities and affordable positioning, it is also highly recommended for seasonal snowbirds seeking a warmer, low-key winter destination away from the hustle of major urban centers.

Beautiful campground, cleanest pit toilets I've ever seen, a little windy, only 2 other people in the campground. No water available so you need to bring all the water you will need. The hike to Chiricahua Peak takes you through rolling hills, Aspen forests, and a bunch of wild raspberry bushes. The dirt road is less sketchy coming from the national monument side and I feel like I did need the clearance my 4runner offered for the side going to Portal. Highly recommend! Very peaceful.

We had not camped here since the fire. Very peaceful and cool at 8500' elevation.
