Cowanesque Lake - COE/Tompkins Rec Area

Overview

Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Cowanesque Lake - Tompkins Rec Area offers a serene escape in the scenic hills of Tioga County. This park is centered around the expansive Cowanesque Lake, providing a tranquil environment for those looking to reconnect with nature. The campground is well-regarded for its spacious sites and lush greenery, making it a favorite for regional travelers seeking a high-quality outdoor experience without the frantic pace of a commercial resort. It balances rugged beauty with well-maintained facilities for a comfortable stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, the park is tucked away just south of the New York state border. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling Appalachian foothills and dense forests that create a picturesque backdrop for every campsite. The proximity to the water ensures that guests are never far from sweeping views of the lake. It feels secluded and peaceful, yet remains highly accessible for those traveling along the Route 15 corridor through the Northern Tier region of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 80 campsites, many of which provide electric hookups suitable for modern RVs. While it maintains a rustic feel, practical needs are met with a centrally located dump station and clean shower facilities. Outdoor recreation is the primary focus here, highlighted by a multi-lane boat ramp and a dedicated swimming beach. Families often appreciate the well-maintained playgrounds and the paved roads, which are excellent for biking around the campground loops or taking evening strolls.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass, located just a short drive across the border in New York. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Pennsylvania Grand Canyon offers breathtaking vistas and extensive hiking trails. Locally, the lake itself is a prime destination for fishing and kayaking, with anglers often targeting bass and muskellunge. The area is also rich in heritage, with charming small towns nearby offering local dining and historical architecture to explore.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and boaters who prioritize scenic beauty and water access over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking for an affordable, quiet summer getaway where kids can play safely outdoors. Because the sites are generous in size, it is also a great choice for big-rig owners who prefer the spaced-out layout typical of Army Corps of Engineers properties compared to the more cramped configurations of private commercial parks.

Beautiful and very well manicured grounds. Campsites are large and very nice. Lake is beautiful. Playground is very nice. Bathhouses are outdated and not real clean or very well maintained.

Lake access, clean, secure campground. Park rangers and host patrol the campground. The grounds are well kept and decent size with asphalt drive and parking spaces. Dogs allowed on the leash.

I stayed for 3 nights with my family and I loved every minute of it. I suggest to visit the snack shack for ice cream and plenty of food options. Another great area is in the RV camp area they play movies and play games for the children.

We stayed in the Bench loop near the water with full hookup. Great place to paddle around with kayaks if you can avoid when the powerboats are out. Generally it was pretty quiet with friendly campers all around. This is a dog friendly campground so if you are not then you may want to avoid staying here. They had activities on the weekend for kids to participate in if you have young ones.

Site at 30Knol was Ok, with power, water, sewer, and pets. Unfortunately Fred was overhead and we were evacuated at 5am thursday morning. No wifi or cell phone service. Definitely too far off-grid for us. Fees were automatically refunded.
