Crooked River

Overview

Crooked River Provincial Park offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of British Columbia's northern interior. Nestled near the community of Bear Lake, this park is celebrated for its crystalline lakes and pristine sandy beaches. It serves as a refreshing sanctuary for travelers navigating the highway toward Alaska, providing a chance to disconnect and immerse themselves in the lush sub-boreal spruce forest. The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, prioritizing a connection with the natural world over modern commercial frills.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently situated approximately 70 kilometers north of Prince George on Highway 97. Despite its proximity to the road, the campground feels worlds away, surrounded by the towering trees and gentle waters of the Crooked River system. The landscape features three distinct lakes—Bear, Livingston, and Kerry—which are connected by the namesake river. These scenic waterways are framed by rolling hills and dense forests, creating a secluded environment where the sounds of nature dominate the landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park, the facilities cater to those seeking a classic camping experience. The campground provides well-spaced sites equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, suitable for various RV sizes. While there are no individual power or water hookups, the park offers essential services for a comfortable stay. Key features include:

  • Large, level sites with gravel pads for easy RV setup.
  • Access to clean pit toilets and hand pumps for drinking water.
  • A convenient boat launch and playground area for families.

One of the standout features is the extensive sandy beach area at Bear Lake, which is perfect for sunbathing or swimming during the warm summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for guests at Crooked River. The Livingston Lake Trail offers a gentle loop through the forest, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography. Anglers often frequent the lakes to cast for rainbow trout, while the calm waters are ideal for paddling and canoeing. For those looking to explore further, the nearby community of Bear Lake offers basic services, and the larger city of Prince George provides cultural attractions and extensive shopping options within a short drive.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for nature-loving families and RVers who prefer a rustic, "off-the-grid" style of camping. It is a fantastic stop for those traveling the long route toward the Yukon who need a scenic place to rest. Because it lacks full hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVs or travelers who appreciate a traditional outdoor experience. If you value quiet evenings by the fire and morning swims in clear lake water, this provincial gem is a must-visit during your British Columbia road trip.

Crooked River Campground (known locally as Bear Lake Campground) is our favorite summer escape. Some of the photos look cloudy only because of all the forest fires we've been having this summer. Usually it's clear skies and fresh air.

Love this place!! 35-40 mins from my driveway. It used to be barren because of the beetle kill years ago but it has bounced back and is thick and green and lush. The campsites are big, well maintained and private. For the most part, you can’t see your neighbours. Beats camping in the Okanagan!! We can have fires too unlike down south. Lake is warm for swimming but there are Zero fish in this lake. Great for paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking. There are washrooms with power, not just outhouses. The main bathroom also has hot showers around the backside. You have to pay a loonie or toonie but you get a good long shower. Great walking paths around the whole lake and a great sandy tiered public swimming beach across the lake from the campground.

A very beautiful, natural lake with long sandy beach! Just one hour drive out of Prince George city Center, it is so nice place for children and parents to enjoy swimming all day long there!

Great campground. Many sites with good access to water. Great setup for families. It was my first time but my wife and friends have been camping there for years. Has water, sani dump, showers, flush toilets and a small playground.

It was quiet and really private. The campsite had a beautiful view of the lake. There were lots of mosquitoes but that added to the whole experience.
