Cross Ranch
Overview
Cross Ranch State Park offers a unique glimpse into the Missouri River as it existed centuries ago. Located near Center, North Dakota, this park is part of a larger nature preserve managed by the Nature Conservancy. It provides a peaceful, unspoiled landscape for travelers looking to disconnect from the modern world. Visitors here find a blend of riverfront beauty and quiet prairie stretches that feel remarkably remote and refreshing.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated along one of the few remaining free-flowing stretches of the Missouri River. The surrounding landscape consists of ancient river bottom forests and sprawling grasslands. Because it is tucked away from major highways, the atmosphere remains quiet and reflective. The riparian ecosystem provides a lush contrast to the surrounding North Dakota plains, making it a haven for diverse wildlife and flora.
Amenities & Park Features
The park caters to RVers with several loops offering 30-amp and 50-amp electrical hookups at the back-in and pull-through sites. While there are no individual sewer hookups, the park provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay:
- Central dump station and potable water access
- Clean modern comfort stations with hot showers
- Dedicated picnic tables and fire rings at each campsite
These features allow for a functional stay while maintaining the rustic charm of the North Dakota wilderness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with over 15 miles of hiking trails weaving through the woods and prairie. Water enthusiasts can launch kayaks or canoes to explore the Missouri River, though the current requires some experience. Nearby, the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site offers a deep dive into regional cultural history. During the winter, the trails transform into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Who This Park Is Best For
Cross Ranch is ideal for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a quiet, rustic camping experience rather than a commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for birdwatchers and hikers who appreciate a well-maintained trail system. If you prefer the sound of wind through the cottonwoods over bustling park activities, this secluded retreat will serve as an excellent base for your North Dakota adventure.

Nice place to stay if you have a totally contained RV. Water is close and so is the dump station. They have a public shower and restrooms that are close to you. It is a 20 minute drive to the closes little town Walford and Bismarck is 45 minutes away. Come prepared and you and your pets and children can enjoy the playground area and the walks along the Missouri River.

Nice campground and well maintained! Beautiful sunrise over the river. Showers are in the office building.

My favorite ND state park campground. My only complaint is they took the kayak dock out 2 or 3 years ago and it doesn't look like it is ever going to be put back in.

Was there for the bluegrass festival. Beautiful area full of cottonwood trees. The park staff were friendly, helpful and patient. The visitor center/park office was nice and cool, big and had activities (it was 97 and humid outside). Nice areas for camping and picnic tables. The little amphitheater was nice. Paths were nice and many were cement. Can't wait to go back and stay in one of the cabins or yurts. Update for 6/25 it is still awesome, beautiful, and it was cooler this year. Beautiful drive from Bismarck and just 40 minutes.

We enjoying staying in their cabins in the fall & winter season! Our most recent stay was in the York cabin. Although it is a little more spendy than the others, we really enjoyed the extra amenities - water, dishes, bathroom, cooking utensils etc. We will definitely stay again!
