Cross Timbers/Toronto Point

Overview

Cross Timbers State Park at Toronto Point offers a unique glimpse into the ecological transition between the eastern forests and western prairies of the Verdigris River valley. Located along the shores of the Toronto Reservoir, this park is celebrated for its ancient oak trees and striking sandstone formations. It provides a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to immerse themselves in Kansas's natural beauty while enjoying reliable camping facilities in a historic, timbered setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Woodson County near Toronto, KS, the Toronto Point area is positioned on the northern side of the lake. The landscape is defined by the Cross Timbers ecosystem, featuring rugged hills and dense forests that feel remarkably secluded. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by rocky ridges and expansive vistas of the 2,800-acre reservoir, making it a prime destination for those who appreciate scenic lakefront views and diverse local flora.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern RV travel, offering a variety of full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and 50-amp electrical service. Visitors have access to modern shower buildings, well-maintained restrooms, and a convenient dump station. For water access, the park features multiple boat ramps and a designated swimming beach. The campsites are thoughtfully integrated into the woods, providing a sense of privacy and shade that is often hard to find in prairie regions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several miles of hiking and biking trails, including the notable Ancient Oaks Trail, which showcases trees that are several centuries old. The reservoir is a major draw for anglers seeking crappie, white bass, and channel catfish. Beyond the water, the surrounding Chautauqua Hills offer excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and birdwatching. For a longer day trip, the nearby Fall River State Park offers additional scenic valleys to explore.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over the bustle of a commercial resort. It is particularly well-suited for families who enjoy water-based activities and hikers looking to explore unique Kansas terrain. Showers/Restrooms are closed in the off season, only vaulted restrooms available. Campground Roads and pads are in good shape. Good Hiking/MTB trails. Great boat ramp and dock.

5/7/2024 Lake is very high with flooding in some spots, but still mostly usable. I stayed in the Toronto Point area and had to move some logs at the boat launch, but was able to get on the water. Beautiful campground and well maintained facility.

Manns Cove is a really primitive site, but a really good spot for hammocking and checking out the water. We were able to spot a copperhead snake, but mostly just lots of spiders and a few skinks. Access to the water is somewhat limited, not much of a beach line. It’s pretty rocky.

I love to hike and camp here year round! The trails are nicely maintained. Added 9/5/22: Fantastic bird watching. Unfortunately, lots of loud people post quiet hour and a lot of trash at the shore and in the campgrounds.
