Curecanti/Stevens Creek
Overview
Stevens Creek Campground offers a quintessential Colorado high-country experience within the expansive Curecanti National Recreation Area. Positioned along the northern shores of the Blue Mesa Reservoir, this National Park Service facility provides a tranquil alternative to busier resort parks. It is characterized by its wide-open vistas and easy access to the water, making it a staple for travelers exploring the rugged terrain between Gunnison and Montrose. The park maintains a serene, natural atmosphere where the landscape takes center stage.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 12 miles west of Gunnison on Highway 50, the park sits at an elevation of roughly 7,540 feet. The surroundings are defined by semi-arid shrublands and dramatic geological formations that reflect the volcanic history of the region. Visitors are treated to sweeping views of the Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water, which contrasts beautifully against the golden hues of the sagebrush hills. The open landscape provides little shade but offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in the state.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic camping destination, Stevens Creek focuses on the essentials of the outdoor experience. The facility is tailored for dry camping, offering a peaceful environment free from the noise of large resort crowds. Key features include:
- Access to communal vault toilets maintained by the National Park Service.
- Seasonal potable water stations located throughout the campground loops.
- Individual sites equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring.
- Proximity to a dump station located at the nearby Elk Creek Visitor Center.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the reservoir, which is a premier destination for lake trout and kokanee salmon fishing. A boat ramp is located on-site, providing direct access to the water when levels permit. Just a short drive west lies the breathtaking Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, famous for its sheer cliffs and dramatic depths. Hikers will enjoy the nearby Dillon Pinnacles Trail, which offers unique views of volcanic spires overlooking the water, while the Gunnison River provides world-class fly-fishing opportunities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for anglers and boaters who want to be steps away from the shoreline. Because of its quiet nature and lack of commercial distractions, it also appeals to budget-conscious travelers and nature photographers looking for a peaceful home base. If you enjoy a boondocking style of camping with the added security of a managed federal site, Stevens Creek is an excellent choice.

Right off the road, quiet and convenient! The pit toilets are clean and there are dog stations scattered throughout. Our site was level and spacious. The online pay system was glitchy so we had to run into town to get some cash. I’d come prepared next time!

Not enough stars availability for this place. Quite, by the lake, chipmunks everywhere. Fishing available. No services at all, complete boondocking.

Well there is only two other campers here now. That’s nice but the sign Toxic Algae Bloom is kinda scary. Don’t tough that water but wash off your fish. Uh don’t worry I won’t do that! I imagine at a different time of year it’s probably been full of water so boats can go out from the boat ramp but now it’s a small creek. It’s ok for a quick stop.
