Custer/Cascade

Overview

Custer and Cascade campgrounds offer a serene, high-elevation retreat within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Situated just outside the charming mountain town of Red Lodge, Montana, these sister sites serve as a primary gateway to the rugged beauty of the Beartooth Mountains. Unlike commercial resorts, these campgrounds focus on providing a primitive camping experience where the natural sound of the West Fork of Rock Creek replaces the noise of city life and highway traffic.

Location & Surroundings

These campgrounds are nestled within a dense canopy of lodgepole pines and Douglas fir trees, providing ample shade and a sense of deep seclusion. Located off the West Fork Road, the setting is defined by steep canyon walls and the cold, rushing waters of the creek nearby. At an elevation of approximately 6,300 feet, the air remains crisp even in mid-summer, and visitors are often treated to sightings of diverse local wildlife such as moose, mule deer, and occasionally black bears.

Amenities & Park Features

As Forest Service sites, the amenities are simple and functional, catering to those who prefer a more traditional style of dry camping. The campgrounds provide the following basics to ensure a comfortable stay in the wilderness:

  • Vault toilets are located within walking distance of the camping loops and are maintained regularly.
  • Potable water is accessible to all guests through shared traditional hand pumps.
  • Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table.

It is important to note that there are no utility hookups or dump stations available on-site, so RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks to enjoy their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to the Beartooth Highway, often described as one of the most scenic drives in the United States. Outdoor enthusiasts can easily access the Beartooth Face Trail or spend days exploring the numerous alpine lakes that dot the high plateau. Anglers will find excellent fly-fishing opportunities in the West Fork of Rock Creek, while the nearby historic town of Red Lodge offers local breweries, fine dining, and unique mountain boutiques.

Who This Park Is Best For

These campgrounds are ideal for travelers seeking a rugged mountain escape rather than a luxury resort experience. They best suit small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, and camper vans that do not require shore power or sewer connections. If you value immediate trail access and a quiet, natural environment over modern conveniences like Wi-Fi or laundry facilities, Custer and Cascade provide a perfect basecamp for exploring the Montana wilderness.

A amazing place now that the forest is growing back and the wildlife coming back, the road is a bit rough getting to it but totally worth it.

Beautiful surroundings very near the West Fork Rock Creek (WFRC). Bear resistant metal food storage bins are included with the campsites. The restrooms are pit toilets, but were clean. WFRC is a small mountain stream with lots of 6"-8" Brook trout that are fun to catch on dry flies.

It's an awesome campground with stream access on the western campsites. There's two loops. The left loop has more tree cover, whereas the right loop has none (which is fine, just bring a canopy).
