Custer/Grace Coolidge
Overview
Grace Coolidge Campground offers a tranquil retreat within the heart of South Dakota’s renowned Custer State Park. Named after the former First Lady, this campground provides a scenic backdrop for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Black Hills. Unlike large commercial resorts, this location focuses on a peaceful creek-side experience where the sounds of flowing water and rustling ponderosa pines define the stay. It serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring one of the nation's largest state parks while maintaining a cozy, intimate atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Situated along the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, the park’s location is defined by its proximity to the sparkling Grace Coolidge Creek. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and the iconic granite outcroppings that make this region famous. Travelers will find themselves perfectly positioned to access the park's diverse ecosystems, ranging from open prairies to rugged mountainous terrain. The creek-side setting offers immediate access to fishing and gentle hiking trails right from your campsite door, making it a prime spot for nature lovers.
Amenities & Park Features
While the setting is rustic, the campground provides essential comforts for RVers. Most sites feature electric hookups, accommodating various rig sizes, though it is primarily suited for mid-sized units. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. Facilities include accessible vault toilets and centralized water spigots, though travelers should note that full sewer hookups are not available at this specific loop. The gravel pads are well-maintained and shaded by mature trees, providing relief during the warm summer months while preserving the area's wild character.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground is a gateway to the famous Wildlife Loop Road, where visitors can encounter free-roaming bison, burros, and pronghorn. A short drive takes you to the stunning Sylvan Lake, often called the crown jewel of the Black Hills, offering kayaking and world-class hiking. History enthusiasts are within easy reach of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Crazy Horse Memorial. For those seeking a scenic drive, the Needles Highway provides breathtaking views of narrow tunnels and granite needles just minutes from the campground.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfect for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, authentic camping experience over high-traffic resorts. It is particularly well-suited for families looking to introduce their children to wildlife and outdoor recreation. Since it offers a more primitive state park vibe, it appeals most to travelers who appreciate solitude and proximity to trailheads. If your travel style involves falling asleep to the sound of a creek and waking up to the possibility of spotting a deer near your rig, this is the ideal South Dakota stopover.

Great little quiet campground. Bathrooms were spotless and so clean that we chose them over our tiny RV bathroom/showers when need be.

We stayed here 6/2-6/5 the site was clean, quiet. It was in a great location. Super low-key. Clean warm bathrooms/ shower. The host was very nice and friendly. Small campground with spacious site, table and fire pit with a grill grate. We did get buffalo visiting the site so that was really cool. I highly recommend staying here.

Grace Coolidge campground is a great little campground that is clean, well kept, and quiet. We had a back-in site which was perfect for our 25 ft travel trailer and pickup and it had 50 amp electric only (no water/sewer) although there is a dump station about 2 miles down the road. The "pull-out" spots are pretty small and really only appropriate for a tent or small camper van. The bathrooms were very clean and updated and the showers are great. The camp host here (we didn't remember her name) is such a sweetheart and will help you with anything you need. We would definitely recommend this campground to anyone who desires a smaller, quiet campground.

It was such a privilege to stay here! The location is perfect, the bathhouse is so clean (AND WARM), and I was falling asleep to the sound of the creek nearby every night. I was there as a solo female tent camper, and it felt incredibly safe there and everyone was so nice, especially Debbie the camp host. I'll be back!

Our campsite #12e was in the perfect location at the end of the row, against a big rock hill and the stream. The stream was perfect to listen to as I drifted to sleep. Ann, the volunteer host was phenomenal. My toddlers were attacked by a hive of bees when we first started setting up our camp. We weren't able to locate the host and the person at the reservation office we spoke to seemed to careless. If it weren't for Ann we were going to be forced to abandon our stay. She was great and we had an amazing time there, all thanks to her! We loved dour site, but custer needs an insight booking agent for issues like this.
