Custer/Greenough Lake
Overview
Custer and Greenough Lake Campgrounds offer a serene, high-altitude escape within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located just off the iconic Beartooth Highway, these side-by-side areas provide a quintessential Montana mountain experience. Surrounded by lodgepole pines and the sound of rushing water, this destination serves as a tranquil basecamp for those who value natural beauty and quiet solitude over modern resort luxuries and high-speed connectivity.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 12 miles south of the charming town of Red Lodge, MT, the campground sits at an elevation of 7,800 feet. It is nestled along the banks of Rock Creek, with Greenough Lake just a short hike away. The scenery is dominated by the rugged Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, where jagged granite peaks and lush alpine meadows create a dramatic, breathtaking backdrop for every morning coffee and evening campfire.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive Forest Service site, the amenities focus on the essentials of outdoor living. Visitors will find the following features at these locations:
- Potable water accessible through seasonal hand-operated pumps.
- Vault toilets located conveniently near the camping loops.
- Dedicated picnic tables and fire rings at every campsite for outdoor cooking.
There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available. Because this is prime grizzly country, strict food storage is required to ensure a safe environment for both travelers and local wildlife.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The main draw is the Beartooth Highway, often called the most beautiful drive in America. Anglers can enjoy fly fishing in Rock Creek or casting for trout in Greenough Lake, which is restricted to non-motorized use. Hikers have immediate access to several trailheads leading into the high country. For a taste of local culture, the galleries and historic Carbon County eateries in Red Lodge are only a short, scenic drive back down the mountain.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers traveling in smaller setups, such as camper vans or mid-sized trailers, due to the tight turns and limited site lengths. It is perfect for travelers seeking a digital detox and a chance to reconnect with the wilderness. If your travel style involves star-gazing, wildlife watching, and rugged exploration away from the crowds, these campgrounds provide the perfect Montana mountain retreat.

This was such a 10/10 campsite. The host kept up on the outhouses SO much throughout the day for each day we stayed. Toilets stayed clean and trash was changed about 5 times throughout the day. For being labor day weekend and the host kept it up as well as they did I was super impressed. Right next to the creek and a short walk from the lake. Gorgeous place and surprisingly very few bugs.

Location is nestled at base of beartooth mountains and is convenient for a stopping off point before jumping into northeast Yellowstone but long stays would be limiting with activities. Red lodge is near but there are closer options. Lake is not designed for good fishing rather scenery. Campsites are nice but camp attendant was hopped up on something or just anger issues. Not all campsites have bear proof cabinets or have functioning grills. Potable water is single source. Honestly 1-2 nights is more than adequate
