Cuyamaca Rancho/Paso Picacho
Overview
Paso Picacho Campground serves as a tranquil mountain retreat nestled within the expansive Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Situated at an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet, this park offers a cooler alternative to the coastal heat of Southern California. It is a historic state park known for its stunning vistas and dense forests of oak and pine. For RVers, it provides a rustic, back-to-nature experience that emphasizes peace and quiet over modern resort luxuries.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 12 miles south of the historic town of Julian, the park is set against the backdrop of the Peninsular Ranges. The surroundings transition from rolling meadows to steep mountain peaks, offering a diverse landscape for exploration. The park’s location makes it a prime spot for observing local wildlife, including deer and wild turkeys. Travelers will appreciate the scenic drive along Highway 79, which provides easy access to the campground while offering breathtaking views of the San Diego backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional state park facility, Paso Picacho focuses on essential comforts rather than extensive hookups. Each site includes a paved parking pad, a fire ring, and a picnic table. While there are no electrical or water hookups at the individual sites, the campground provides centrally located restrooms with token-operated showers. A dump station and potable water are available for RV users. It is important to note that site lengths vary, with most accommodating rigs up to 30 feet, making it ideal for smaller trailers and campervans.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves at the trailhead for two of the area's most popular hikes: Stonewall Peak and Cuyamaca Peak. These trails offer panoramic views that can reach as far as the Pacific Ocean on clear days. Just a short drive away is Lake Cuyamaca, where visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, and birdwatching. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Julian is famous for its apple pies, gold mining history, and charming boutique shops.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for travelers seeking a rustic camping experience and a deep connection with the outdoors. It is perfect for families looking to introduce children to hiking and nature photography. Because of the size limitations and lack of hookups, it is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking-style amenities in a beautiful, forested setting. Those who prioritize stargazing and mountain air over high-speed internet will find this park to be a refreshing escape.

The scenery is like not other! It was my first time coming here and I'm impressed! The trails are clean and so are the restrooms, a bunch of friendly people around to help if you need it as well. The trail is pretty easy to follow even for someone as clueless as me. Loved it!

Beautiful location. Breathtaking hiking trails with good variety of types and lengths. I stayed in Live Oak cabin and really enjoyed the solitude.

Jewel of the areas parks. If you've been to Cuyamaca you know. My dad brought me here when a was a boy...some 55 years later I'm still coming back. Clean sites, clean facilities. Most of the camp sites are on sloping ground so if you are tenting be advised. Bring dollar bills for showers, $2 will get you 4 minutes and the water is good and hot. Hiking throughout the park and lake fishing nearby.

First, the campground is clean, spaces are large enough, location is excellent, bathrooms are clean. There are numerous hikes that you can get to from here without needing a vehicle. The campground gets five stars. The showers take tokens. One token for two minutes, two tokens for a dollar. Change machines are located outside the showers. The shower heads are not very good. Bathrooms are clean. My biggest (and regular) complaint is with Park Rangers not enforcing the basic camping rules. Mainly, quiet hours, dogs off leash or on trails (No dogs allowed on ANY trails). Although one rule Rangers do rigorously enforce is no checking in before 2 PM. We all want to have an enjoyable camping experience but some campers just cannot grasp the idea that we ALL share this campground. Please, be respectful of your fellow campers and adhere to the simple park rules so we can all have a good time.

Site #7. Large campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park with clean flush toilets and hot showers. Miles of hiking trails leave from the campground, with our favorite being the hike to Stonewall Peak which has amazing 360 degree views. Just down the road is Lake Cuyamaca for boaters and fishermen, complete with a bait shop and a great lunch spot, The Pub at Lake Cuyamaca. Town of Julian is not too far away if you’re at the campground for an extended stay and crave delicious apple pie.
