Cypress Hills

Overview

Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park offers a dramatic departure from the surrounding Canadian prairies. Rising high above the plains near Medicine Hat, this unique high-altitude plateau features lush lodgepole pine forests and cool spring temperatures. As Canada's first interprovincial park, it provides a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and offers RV travelers a refreshing escape into a rare ecosystem that feels more like the foothills of the Rockies than the flatlands of southeastern Alberta.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 65 kilometers south of Medicine Hat, the park is centered around the Elkwater townsite. The geography is striking, as the hills were never covered by glaciers during the last ice age, leaving a distinctive landscape of steep coulees and fescue grasslands. The park overlooks the vast prairie landscape, providing stunning vistas from points like Conglomerate Cliffs, while the shaded valleys offer a sheltered retreat for campers looking to escape the summer heat.

Amenities & Park Features

The park accommodates a wide range of RV sizes across several well-maintained campgrounds. The Elkwater Campground is the primary choice for those seeking comfort, offering various site types:

  • Sites with full hookups (power, water, and sewer) for modern rigs.
  • Power-only sites located in shaded, forested loops.
  • Access to potable water and centralized sani-dump stations.

Most loops include access to modern washrooms and coin-operated showers, ensuring a comfortable stay for long-term travelers and weekenders alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heart of the Cypress Hills experience. Visitors can enjoy boating and fishing on Elkwater Lake or explore over 50 kilometers of hiking and mountain biking trails. The park is also a designated Dark Sky Preserve, making it a premier destination for stargazing far from city lights. During the day, the Horseshoe Canyon viewpoint offers a panoramic look at the unique geology, while the Visitor Centre provides educational programs about the local flora and fauna.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who appreciate a blend of outdoor adventure and convenient amenities. It is a perfect fit for those who enjoy birdwatching, as the unique climate attracts species not found elsewhere in the region. Whether you are a photographer seeking the perfect sunset over the coulees or an RVer looking for a tranquil retreat with modern conveniences, Cypress Hills provides a scenic and educational stopover that captures the spirit of the Canadian West.

Great camping, beautiful nature, peaceful. Great place to “disconnect” from the hustle and bustle. I recommend Reesor lake. Gorgeous. Check for fire bans though so you don’t end up in a pickle.

Beautiful place that bridges two Canadian provinces. The community here is so rich and inviting, and the amenities (showers) are present for the most part to enhance your stay. Stayed at Medicine Lodge, and would not recommend this lodge as it was infested with many bugs (horse flies and moths) and does not come with internal lighting. Would recommend to simply camp or find another lodge. Elkwater Lake is beautiful at sunset and the beach area is well maintained as well. There are many POIs to explore in the park. We had a blast and would definitely recommend it as a good vacation spot.

Beautiful landscape and a great main beach. Good for hiking for all kinds of hiking trails. Shower facilities were excellent. The free mini golf was an added bonus. The camp store, and more importantly maybe, the laundromat, were not functional and there is a lack of small child friendly activities when it's very windy or poor weather. The outhouses were not on par with usual provincial park outhouses. Not very clean and lots of broken door locks. Also the goose poop and swimmers itch weren't great.

Beautiful place! The lake is nice with sand beaches. The campgrounds are for all tastes: woods, close to the beach and even one fully serviced. Great for family trips!

An oasis in the prarie. Beautiful scenery and hiking with a nice big lake and well kept beach, with lovely green areas close by. It's quiet with not much for amenities. The beach has a changeroom and washroom. The speed limit is 30km/h. Such a peaceful yet busy place to visit in he summer. If you love Swirls ice-cream, they've had a food truck by the beach every time I've gone.
