Dailey Lake

Overview

Dailey Lake offers a rugged and authentic Montana camping experience situated in the heart of the picturesque Paradise Valley. Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, this high-desert recreation area provides a scenic retreat for travelers who appreciate wide-open spaces and direct access to recreational water. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, making it a favorite for those who want to escape the crowded commercial campgrounds often found closer to the busy national park entrances.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned south of Emigrant, Montana, nestled between the towering peaks of the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges. Because of its location in a high-elevation valley, the area is famously known for its constant breeze and stunning 360-degree views. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and prairie, providing a stark, beautiful contrast to the deep blue waters of the lake. It is conveniently reached via a gravel road off the main Highway 89 corridor.

Amenities & Park Features

As a public recreation area, the facilities here are primarily primitive, catering specifically to self-contained RVs and campers. Visitors will find vault toilets, picnic tables, and metal fire rings at the designated sites located around the shoreline. There are no water, sewer, or electrical hookups available on-site, so come prepared with full tanks. However, the park features a well-maintained dual-lane boat launch and several fishing docks, which serve as the primary hub for activity throughout the summer.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with the lake being a premier regional hotspot for walleye and rainbow trout fishing. It is also one of the few places in the region popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding due to the steady mountain gusts. Beyond the lake, travelers are just a short drive from the historic Chico Hot Springs for a soak or a fine meal. The North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park is also within a reasonable driving distance for a day trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for boondockers and independent RVers who prioritize natural scenery and water access over luxury resort amenities. If you enjoy a rustic environment where the focus is on the landscape and wildlife rather than paved pads and WiFi, this is a perfect fit. It is also a great choice for anglers and water sports enthusiasts looking for a functional base camp while exploring the majestic beauty of the Paradise Valley region.

So this is a beautiful place but usually it is extremely windy and this year when I went the wind wasn't too bad but the bugs were ridiculous. We went to fish in May and it was a beautiful place to fish and easy but the bugs were horrible and we didn't get a bite.

Beautiful mountain lake. Great place to practice stillwater fly-fishing. Lacking one star because directions to the location are completely wrong. The only way to get there is via East River Rd to 6 Mile Creek Rd to Dailey Lake Rd.
