Daniel Boone/Twin Knobs

Overview

Twin Knobs Campground serves as a premier gateway to the outdoor wonders of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Situated along the expansive shores of Cave Run Lake in Morehead, Kentucky, this large-scale facility offers a classic forest camping experience. It provides a peaceful escape where the sounds of the woods take precedence over the hum of the city. With nearly 200 sites tucked under a lush canopy of hardwoods, it is one of the most popular federal campgrounds in the region, offering a perfect blend of natural serenity and organized recreation for seasonal travelers.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled on a peninsula within the 8,270-acre Cave Run Lake, providing guests with unparalleled access to the water. Located just a short drive from the city of Morehead, the surrounding landscape is defined by the rolling hills of the Cumberland Plateau and dense forest greenery. The topography offers a sense of seclusion, with many sites offering filtered views of the lake. Being positioned within the Daniel Boone National Forest means the park is part of a vast ecosystem known for its limestone cliffs, narrow ravines, and diverse wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

Twin Knobs is well-equipped to handle various camping styles, offering numerous sites with electric hookups that are suitable for most RVs. While individual sewer connections are not provided, the park maintains a convenient dump station and provides access to fresh water. Guests have access to modern amenities, including multiple bathhouses featuring flush toilets and warm showers. For recreation within the park, visitors can enjoy designated swimming beaches, boat ramps for easy lake access, and several volleyball courts and horseshoe pits for family-friendly competition.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the main draw here, as Cave Run Lake is widely considered the Muskie Capital of the South, making it a bucket-list destination for serious anglers. Beyond the water, hikers can explore miles of forested paths, including access to the famous Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. Those looking for local culture can visit the nearby Kentucky Folk Art Center or explore the charming shops and local eateries in downtown Morehead. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers and photographers looking to capture the beauty of the Appalachian foothills.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal match for nature-focused families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenic beauty over high-end resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy a rustic environment but appreciate the convenience of on-site electric service and clean facilities. Whether you are a boater looking for easy lake access or a hiker wanting a basecamp near the Sheltowee Trace, Twin Knobs offers a peaceful, well-maintained setting that caters to those who truly want to immerse themselves in the Kentucky wilderness.

Loved our stay at this campground this week. It was very well maintained and clean. The bathrooms/showers were extremely clean and well taken care of. Shout out to Justin (our Italian host) for making us feel welcome and for entertaining us. Landon I’m glad you got your bear back!! We will be back! ~One of the Italian sisters from H loop! 🇮🇹

This is the first time I’ve ever been to this campsite and I am BEYOND blown away. The lake is crystal clear, there is very little trash (you can’t catch all litterers) and the trails and campsites are VERY well maintained. From the moment I arrived here every employee was helpful and seemed to actually LOVE not just like or tolerate their job. The site also offers a free movie, popcorn and hot coco every Saturday night in October along with trick r treating in every campsite except for the final weekend in OCT. Thank you to all the staff at twin knobs. From the front of house check in to the rangers!

Had a great time at the Halloween event here this weekend. Staff were friendly and the kids loved trick or treating the camp sites! Loved the haunted walk through the woods and Casper at the amphitheater! Will definitely come back next weekend

I thought I posted a review 9 years ago when I stayed here! I stayed over one night in 2016 when I was on a several thousand mile road trip. I got there in the late evening, was assisted greatly to a wonderful sight by the entrance staff member, took a quick swim, and caught a beautiful sunset. The sites were wonderful and I would definitely return! I would stay longer the next time, and it remains one of the most memorable places I've stayed out of hundreds! Of course, I sure hope that it has remained the same or only improved since 2016. I read a few more recent reviews, and it sounds like it has continue to be a great place to stay in Daniel Boone National Forest!

First time at Twin Knobs with the kids. Camp sites are very well maintained and fast enough apart that you don't feel like you're camping with your neighbours. Had one minor issue with someone nearby blazing their music but I called the camp host and they took care of it within 15 min. We were at site F28 which was right next to the lake so great views but we did experience some boat traffic noise. It wasn't too frequent so I'm not complaining, just sharing for your benefit. Bathrooms were easy to get to and much cleaner than I was expecting. Overall had a great time and would definitely return.
