Daniel Boone/Zilpo Campground

Overview

Daniel Boone/Zilpo Campground offers a serene retreat deep within the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Located on a scenic peninsula along the shores of Cave Run Lake, this facility provides a true escape from the bustle of daily life. The campground is well-regarded for its spacious campsites and lush, wooded environment, making it a premier destination for those seeking a balance of outdoor recreation and quiet relaxation. Visitors often appreciate the well-maintained sites that provide a sense of privacy amidst the towering trees.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Salt Lick, KY, the park is defined by its proximity to the 8,270-acre Cave Run Lake. The surrounding terrain features rolling hills and dense hardwood forests that transform into vibrant colors during the fall season. Because the campground sits on a peninsula, many areas offer stunning water views and easy access to the shoreline, providing a sense of seclusion and deep immersion in the natural beauty of eastern Kentucky's landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to various camping styles, offering both primitive spots and sites with electric hookups suitable for RVs. Essential facilities are designed to make your stay comfortable while maintaining the natural charm of the forest. Features include:

  • Modern bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets.
  • A convenient dump station and potable water access for self-contained travelers.
  • A designated swimming beach and multiple boat ramps for lake access.

Additionally, a small country store is available on-site for ice, firewood, and basic camping supplies, ensuring you have what you need for a successful trip.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for adventure, starting with fishing and boating directly on Cave Run Lake. Hikers can explore the nearby Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, which winds through the forest's rugged landscape. For a panoramic view of the region, the Tater Knob Fire Tower is a popular short excursion. Wildlife viewing is also a major draw, as the area is home to diverse bird species and white-tailed deer. The nearby Clear Creek Market and various historic sites offer a glimpse into the local culture of the Appalachian foothills.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal choice for nature-focused families and boaters who want to be steps away from the water. It appeals most to RVers who prefer a more rustic, forested atmosphere over a high-density commercial resort. If you enjoy peaceful evenings by a campfire and days spent exploring forest trails or paddling along the lake, Daniel Boone/Zilpo Campground offers the perfect setting for your next Kentucky road trip.

We drive all the way out to Zilpo beach and discovered it was closed. The road is blocked off. After doing some Googling… it is closed indefinitely due to flood damage. I hope this review helps anyone who might want to visit. It would help if the rangers would add a sign to the bottom of the road announcing that the beach area is closed. Normally, Zilpo is a less crowded location to swim. Not as sandy as Twin Knobs.

Have been camping in the H loop every year for well over 35 years. Sadly this year they closed the campground because of flood damage so really missing it. I rebooked it 4 times this year and ended up missing camping at all because of all these last minute cancellations. I wish they would have handled it better.

We stayed in G-Loop and had a wonderful experience! Our camp hosts Jason and Lisa were phenomenal, have never had such wonderful sweet hosts. They worked so hard to make everyone's stay comfortable, picking up debris after hurricane damage, and even hosting a new tradition of trick-or-treat in the campground. Such a sweet place with precious memories. Our campsite was SO comfortable, the place was very clean, and the lake was so beautiful! Had a wonderful relaxing time away. Yes there are mosquitos and ticks while hiking- just part of the outdoors- bring bug spray for hikes and some Therm-o-cell citronella for the evenings at camp and you'll be just fine. Happy camping!

All around, top notch, 5 star experience. Campground very nice, clean, and organized. Boat ramp easy accessible, beach, store, ice anything you could possibly need. Staff both friendly and helpful and go well above and beyond expectations. G loop host, Buffalo and Lisa receive my highest compliments. They have done a fantastic job keeping Zilpo Campground a true hidden gem. Thank you all.

Beautiful spot for a weekend getaway with my family! Loved the convenience of having direct access to cave run lake. Our site and cabin were both as clean as you can get when outdoors and the cold AC in the cabin was very refreshing after a hot day spent on the lake! I loved seeing the wildlife and the fact that anything I needed the staff was there to help without any complaints! We will be making a trip up very frequently :)
