Dannelly Lake - COE/Chilatchee Creek
Overview
Chilatchee Creek Campground, part of the Dannelly Lake project, offers a peaceful retreat along the Alabama River. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park is renowned for its well-spaced sites and scenic waterfront vistas. Travelers often find this to be a hidden gem where the pace of life slows down significantly, allowing for deep connection with the natural beauty of Alabama’s historic Black Belt region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Alberta, Alabama, the park sits on the shores of the William Bill Dannelly Reservoir. The landscape is defined by dense pine and hardwood forests that provide ample shade for most campsites. Because of its remote location, the surrounding area remains largely untouched, offering a quiet environment free from highway noise. The proximity to the water makes it a prime spot for viewing local wildlife along the shoreline.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features sites equipped with water and electric hookups, and many offer stunning views of the creek or the reservoir. Visitors have access to essential facilities including a dump station, laundry room, and hot showers. For those who enjoy life on the water, the park provides a multi-lane boat ramp and a dedicated fish cleaning station. Families will also appreciate the on-site playground and the paved roads that are perfect for biking or walking.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While fishing for crappie and bass is the primary draw, there is much to explore nearby. A short drive and ferry ride leads to the historic community of Gee’s Bend, world-famous for its unique quilting tradition. History enthusiasts can visit Selma to explore significant Civil Rights landmarks. The surrounding Dannelly Lake area also offers numerous spots for birdwatching and photography, especially during the migratory seasons when the wetlands become incredibly active.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for avid anglers and boaters looking for easy access to one of the state's best fishing reservoirs. It is equally suited for retirees and families who prefer a quiet, nature-centric experience over a busy resort atmosphere. If you enjoy spacious campsites and the sounds of the forest at night, Chilatchee Creek provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing, disconnected getaway.

Nice campground. Sites are in great shape. Aside from a couple that are not concrete but they ain’t too bad. Most all sites have plenty of shade and water front access

The road coming in was a little hairy as it is dirt until September when pavement is supposed to start. The park itself is beautiful, clean, and very well maintained. The sites are level and clearly marked and has a nice playground for children.

One of my absolute favorite places to camp! To me, this is a hidden gem. I like that it's a smaller site and at night it is so quiet. Clean restroom area with showers. Beautiful views of the river with docks and piers.

Going to Corps of Engineers Parks has become an adventure for me and my family. This one is definitely a hidden gem. We were the inly campers there the entire weekend! The camp host/hostess was very friendly and checked in on us at the beginning of the trip as well as came to tell us goodbye and make sure that we enjoyed our stay! The road on the way in is a dirt road, and there were some pretty big holes due to logging trucks, but the park is amazing and full of wildlife! The view from our campsite was breath-taking! If you're up for it, there is a ferry not far from there that I highly recommend as well!

The campgound is nice, but didn't like the dirt road. We left a little earlier than planned, because there was rain in the forecast ie, mud. Host & camp workers were very nice.
